Informal paper presentation among friends and fellow scholars

The MS/PhD seminar is a great way to get our work out there, but are formal events that are milestones in our degree. They have the presence of faculty, or require presence of our DC.

Imagine a more informal meeting, with friends, and faculty too if they are interested. A meeting which is not aimed specifically at a limited audience from your own area of work but a more general audience. Imagine being able to speak to a general audience of science enthusiasts and getting invaluable feedback on methodology and inference. You could run ideas through the diverse audience and get innovative perspectives on your work.

I propose that research scholars get together every week (or every two weeks) for such a session. We could have food and tea along with a wonderful discussion.

Every week, there could be submissions of an abstract by those who wish to speak. These can then be sent out to some mailing list. We will need a team that actively curates this and takes responsibility for sending out mailers and booking the venue.

We already have sessions on using tools that are helpful to all researchers. Linux users community in IITM has people who have a general interest in science. I thought the existing LUG is a great place of enthusiasts to pitch this idea to. Hope the mods don't kick me out for posting this on the LUG forum.

Also tagging POPSCICLE, which was an earlier forum which did something similar. It had scholars and faculty coming in and making presentations to a general audience. I don't know if their email address is still active though.

Warm Regards,
