Linux is a derivative of Unix. This means that strong, well know and free OS architecture exist in side.bad part of it managing is hard you must be really a system admin(working with config files not Configurations IDEs many times),programming is always seems hard :),linux is the power of console or kernel utils, many people dont like working with it.
İ am giving the some adresses of explain the question with more details. And before saying linux ,unix or windows better ,we must compare the what we are done :) and our capabilitys ,wishes comes with next .

Linux is free and developed by those who want to help it along. So, it
is as good as they can make it. It is intended to work for everyone
and on every hardware platform. Most programs are the same. All of
the development is based on the idea that good software should be free.
Also, there are less viruses for Linux and if you do have one, the
only way to make it do any harm is to log in as an administrator and
let it do all it wants to, so there are very few problems with that.
The security is a huge improvment from windoze (Ubuntu Dapper Drake is
an exeption, all users have permission to change the admin passwords,
but is is obselete anyway) Compared to other free operating systems,
it is bigger, has more developers and is more popular, so it is
developed much faster. It has:
Good networking
A fast kernel (more CPU time for programs)
More free programs
Less bugs (compared to windoze)
Free c/c++ compilers
Software RAID support (faster hard drives, if you have two)

The main problem is that windoze is still more popular, so some
hardware companies don't make Linux drivers.

My contendedness with Linux currently stems from the sheer maleability
of it. With Linux being open source, I can of course make any number of
changes I wish to the underlying system (kernel etc.), and also to all
the programs on top. Being a programmer, I like to be fully in control
of my computer, and Linux facilitates this wonderfully.

Also, the development rate of Linux is extremely quick, with new
projects starting, bugfixing, and bringing out new releases every
single day and I like to be part of this rapidly changing thing.

It's going to be impossible to answer the question of "Is linux
better", but if you want to be part of a fast moving project, with
plenty of scope, and a foot (maybe two feet) in the doorway of the
future of computers, get Linux.
