I believe it requires restricted drivers, so connect it over ethernet (may need usb ethernet dongle if you it doesn't have a port) and you should be able to pull them down.  Otherwise you'd have download the drivers elsewhere and copy them over via usb.

Hey guys,

I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB drive on my Macbook, but I can't connect to my wifi. How do I set up my wifi connection in Ubuntu?

Thanks,

Hi Bob,

I'll guess you're using 16.04? There's a problem with Ubuntu 16.04 and wifi. Don't know the fix - I use Ubuntu-Mate and they managed to avoid the problem entirely...

But can I boot Ubuntu-Mate off of a USB drive?

Sure, it's an official spin:

:)

Ok, I have Ubuntu-Mate installed on my USB drive, but it stops at the Grub prompt, and waits for a command, when I try to boot up. What command is it looking for?

Hi Bob,

You shouldn't be seeing that. You're trying to install onto a Macbook, or...? Installing on a Macbook requires using a Mac EFI bootloader, you can't do it straight from a typical live iso installer as is. Do a Google search for 'Macbook dual boot efi ubuntu', and be sure you know *exactly* which rev. of Macbook you have.

     This might help: http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/80702/from-apples-to-penguins-las-361/

I installed it onto my USB drive using this software:

https://www.sevenbits.io/mlul/

It's not a simple iso copy & paste in to the drive.

Ok, so you probably imaged the USB stick properly, but you booted mbr. On a Macbook you are required to boot the USB stick (or the internal drive) via EFI.

You need something like BootCamp to boot onto anything other than OSX.

When I booted up, I selected the EFI USB drive option. It's not that. How do I get Grub to quit, so I can proceed? What command should I use?

I don't know that it's matter  of getting grub to "quit", but to be configured properly. Something else is very wrong if grub is stopping.

Ok, so then my Mac Linux Boot Installer installed the iso incorrectly then?

Can you help me to use the default Ubuntu installer (UNetbootin), please?

Bob, I've never installed on a Macbook, but it's general knowledge in the Linux community that it is not a trivial task to install on a Macbook.

You NEED to look at rEFInd - it's an EFI bootloader that you require to boot anything other than OSX. Unetbootin won't work: http://www.howtogeek.com/213396/how-to-boot-a-linux-live-usb-drive-on-your-mac/

David,

If you scroll down a little bit on that site that you referred me to, you will see that they recommend that we use this program: https://www.sevenbits.io/mlul/ I am currently using that program, and it did the USB drive installation without any errors, but it has either caused this problem with Grub, or I need to install something else, or else my MackBook doesn't like Ubuntu-Mate. Which is it?

Thanks,

Bob

David,

I installed plain Ubuntu (not Ubuntu-Mate) using https://www.sevenbits.io/mlul/ and it runs fine on my MacBook, but I cannot get my wifi to work. Hence, someone suggested that I try Ubuntu-Mate, but it is creating this Grub error. Am I to assume that Ubuntu-Mate won't run on my MacBook, since I'm getting this Grub problem?

Thanks,

Bob

Well Bob, your guess is as good as mine, since I only know half of what you've done

Disclaimer: I have zero experience installing Linux on a Mac.

I took a look at the Max Linux USB Loader tool, it looks like it uses its own UEFI bootloader to boot into grub which can then mount the distribution's ISO and continue booting Linux. A common problem that users seem to face with this tool (as detailed at https://github.com/SevenBits/Mac-Linux-USB-Loader/issues/21) is that the tool uses a preconfigured instance of grub which expects each distribution to be laid out in a certain way. If the ISO is not named as it expects or if the files within the ISO do not match the layout expected by the tool, grub will fail to boot into Linux and dump you into the prompt that you see.

You can start by checking to see if the UbuntuMate ISO on the USB has been named boot.iso and is in the /EFI/BOOT/ directory. If you still have the same problem after that you might need to see about creating a custom grub.conf to drop in alongside the ISO. For that I'd recommend poking the creator of the MLUL tool.
