I am a newbie to Linux and currently using Fedora 10. I used to work on WAMP for php/mysql applications on windows. Can anyone give me idea on how to setup a similar server on Linux ? I guess XAMPP will workout but how to do that and is there any other alternative ?

Also, somebody told me that setting up a Mail (SMTP) server on Linux is much more easy than on windows. Can anyone give me idea how to do that ?

just give the links and hints to me I'll read or search for the same.

Thanks in Advance.

Although, you have XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html),
I've only used it a little because I tend to build the software I use.
It includes apache, php, mysql, xim as a mail server, etc...
I recommend you lighttpd and qmail, both are great pieces of software,
specially qmail. And I've also developed software for qmail, I wrote a
threaded and pluggeable queue called nqqueue.

Ankit!
As David suggested the method its a good option. There are independent
RPMs provided by Fedora or any other distro...
for Web application activity. Install the RPMs such as MySQL, PHP,
Apache and host any web application.
Look into the configuration files of apache to configure the
parameteres for webserver and /etc/php.ini for PHP settings
for processing and /etc/my.cnf file for MySQL settings.

Well for the complete procedure for setting up webserver you can refer
to the link optinally.

There is a complete step-by-step procedure at
