Dunno if you'll get an answer here, she's a pretty dead NG <grin>. What
the heck, I'll post.
From what I can gather, some of the stuff that gets developed in the beta
kernel gets transferred over to the 2.4.latest, but only if the feature is
deemed stable. Maybe it's the other way around, stuff that is developed
under the latest stable kernel is added to the beta... whatever. There is
stuff that becomes stable from one branch or the other, and it gets
included on both kernels. How's that? On the other hand, the hot new
features on 2.5 may not get backported. For instance, preemption is (I
think) the "next big thing", and the ability to use greater quantities of
CPUs in parallel (scalability? I *think* Linux 2.4 taps out at something
like 32 processors). Both are being worked on in 2.5.x, but I really doubt
preemption is going to be offered in the 2.4 series. Are you after some
specific attiribute?

Well, the cool thing about linnux is that there is a *ton* of stuff online.
If you bookmark this page, you'll probably find text on just about any
subject involving linux, it is arranged in alphabetical order. There is a
kernel HOWTO about halfway down the page.
