hi all,
i'm having this weird problem.I'm using the Gericom Masterpiece 2440XL
laptop. Its' hardware is optimised for WinXP.But I tried to install the
slackware linux and succeeded...sort of.When I tried to install slack
8.1 (which comes with a default 2.4.18 kernel) in boot process it said
it had problem in recognizing my pci configuration. And since my HDD is
attached on the pci bus, it tries to find my hdd and hangs up.I tried to
install slack 8.0 (which comes with a default 2.2.19 kernel) and
everything worked fine.So I got suspicious. Why was that? I tried also
the following OSes:

Oses succeeded:
- ---------------
Slackware 8.0
Slackware 7.0
NetBSD 1.6.1

OSes failed:
- ------------
OpenBSD 3.1
FreeBSD 5.0
Red Hat 9.0
Mandrake 9.1
Slackware 8.1

The common thing about the all the succeeded linuxes is their 2.2.x
kernels, and about all the failed linuxes their 2.4.x kernels.(I don't
know much about *BSD, just tested them).
The next step was to find out at which stage of kernel development the
bug was introduced. I downloaded the 2.2.25 kernel and compiled it. It
works just fine.But 2.3.1, 2.3.15 and 2.4.20 kernels hang up.So, it must
be the changes from 2.2 dev tree to the 2.3.I cannot provide more
information for several reasons:
1) I'm not a kernel developer. So the only thing I managed to succeed in
searching the kernel source is to spend a looooooooot of time doing
nothing...
2) Since I'm using a laptop optimized for WinXP, my motherboard has a
winmodem.Right now I'm using my winxp and I can't have my dmesg (except
if I write it down or do some extra ntfs-ext2 compatibility work...)

So, any ideas? ...Fixes?
Anyone with similar problem?I'd really appreciate your help.
Thnx in advance,

spyros
