Given the complexity of establishing printing on a Unix system compared
to that functionality on a Windows system, it was a pleasure when I
finally was able to print from the Red Hat Linux 8.0 machine to an Epson
printer connected to Windows 98SE machine via SMB across my home
network. I had achieved Samba-ness!

I went on to a different project: LDAP, in the course of which I
installed a program (Red Hat Domain Controller 2.0 G from System Toolbox
a.k.a. RH Server Development Project) that tried to configure Samba as a
primary domain controller. After that project installation (multiple
programs including older versions of Webmin and Samba), I lost a number
of things, chiefly the ability to print from the Linux machine to the
Windows printer. I am stumped as to how to restore this lost functionality.

The restored smb.conf looks to be the same and the printconf also seems
the same.

In trying to re-establish the ability to print from the Linux machine to
my one printer, another thing that I have noticed is that I no longer
have SWAT, either from within Webmin, or from the Red Hat menu.

And, today, I checked something else and learned that I have lost
another Samba functionality. I had been able to mount the Windows files
on the Linux machine, then back them up. The mount command in the script
now fails.

Proximate to the time that I tried installing the Domain Controller, Red
Hat provided an update to Samba. I now have the most current version,
2.2.7-2. Could it be a problem with the version, rather than the changes
to configurations by Domain Controller Project? I recall ignoring a
message that said the current upgrade was incompatible with my
configuration. I assumed at the time that was due to Domain Controller
Project changes.

Any suggestions??? Is there a way to roll back to the previous Samba
version to see if that makes a differnce in functionality?

Best regards,

Jonathan Smith

I believe the expression is "Well, duh!" I discovered that smbclient was
missing; and, when I reinstalled it, printing and mounting worked again.
