Hi all,

I need to add a windows nt4 (sp6a) server to our samba-4.1.6 active
directory. I installed nt4 as a 'stand alone server'. So far it doesn't
work, I get:

When selecting to 'create a computer account in the domain':
- the machine account for this computer either does not exist or is
inaccessible

If I create a computer account manually, and do not check 'create a
computer account in the domain', I get:
- unable to contact the domain controller for this domain. Have your
administrator check your computer account on the domain.

Internet works, dns is set to my AD dns server. (I guess not that it
matters...)

So, before trying all kinds of stuff...: Is this (adding an nt4 server
as a 'regular client') still supposed to work with recent samba4?

Kind regards,
MJ

Cool! Would good ol' DSClient help?

Haha, 'cool'... ;-)

Not so much, but well: old financial system, with archived data...only
runs on nt...

Thanks for the tip.

No personal experience but just a note that NT4 is NetBIOS based and
there you probably need a WINS server running for NT4 to locate the
DC.

I have a somewhat similar scenario: was able to take an old NT4 PDC
running Exchange, virtualize it (to no longer be dependent upon the
ancient hardware), have a virtualized Samba3 install take over the PDC
duties, demote NT4 to a member server and allow it to continue running
Exchange. And I've been wondering ever since what would happen if
"upgraded" the Samba3 install to a Samba4 AD, would the NT4 Exchange
member server just continue to work? Maybe with the aforementioned
DSClient?

I've had issues with NT4 member servers since they don't support Extended
Auth.

If the machine is hosting SMB resources, you might want to check this one
out: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10059

Hi Chris and Ryan, list,

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm not onsite now, but I'll give it a try
next week!
