The machine I attempted to install this on had been running FC3,
and has had many versions of Linux and other systems installed
on various hard drives in recent history.
Is the DVD .iso corrupt?

Stop right there. If the MD5 does not match there is no need to go
further.
However, this is a known problem with most FTP downloads: most FTP clients
have problems with file sizes over 2GB.
Two points: 1) make sure that the filesystem where you intend to store the
DVD image supports files greater than 2GB; and 2) try using curl(1)
instead.
Cheers!
It turns out the DVD iso was downloaded correctly.
The problem is that the MD5 sum was replaced with a sha1.
After some snooping around I figured this out and verified
the download with a sha1sum -c command.
It would have been helpful if the Release Notes had mentioned that
MD5 checksum had been replaced with sha1sum.
CAUTION: the drive parameter corruption may have returned.

This is a test release so you can spot that and file a bugzilla report.
Have you? No? Well, then don't bother with a test release if you're not
going to follow up with it.
Cheers

I experienced exactly the same problems. I burnt the DVD twice, and
verified both copies. Both DVDs failed the install disc check, then
appeared to install without errors, but the system would not boot
afterwards.
I gave up, downloaded Mandrake 10.2 RC1, and everything is running
fine now. I found this thread searching on groups.google.com. Has no
one else tested FC4?
I burned three DVDs as well as the CD set for FC4 Test1.
I used the same procedure that worked with previous Fedora Core versions,
not to mention dozens of other .iso distros.
All the FC4 .iso files passed the sa1sum check. On the last attempt I
mounted the .iso image and compared CRSs of the RPMS with those on the DVD
I'd burned, without discrepancies.
ALL CDs/DVDs failed the Fedora install media check, 7 in all.
I was able to get a partially functional install of the default desktop
set. The post install time, audio and video settings did not run.
