Hi,
I'd like some guidance to a documentation store about relating the
rehdat version, their marketed names and the core linux version
numbers i.e kernel. For example:
- RedHat Advanced Server 4.0 is called something else (version number
wise) in Red Hat Enterprise (I believe Enterprise Linux AS release 4
(Nahant Update 5) on my env) (in /etc/redhat-release) What does Nahant
Update mean?
- If I cat /proc/version I see Red Hat 3.4.6-3 on my env.
- I would like a chart that releates the RHAS, RHEL, kernel etc. to
understand more clearly what I'm running. We use RH for product
development so it's crucial we can tell our customers exactly what
they should be running. If we don't know ourselves because of some
marketing obfuscation that's not a good start :-)
Any guidance appreciated!

Ger,

Look at these Wikipedia articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Linux#Version_history
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#Version_history
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_(operating_system)#Releases

As you might see in these articles you should split the name differently:
Nahant Update 5 means: Nahant (nickname op Version 4) Update 5 (the 5th
update)

The article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#Version_history
tells you which kernel release is put on the DVD or the CD-set of the
RHEL Update.

Kind regards,
