PPP connection fails all the the time: help me to find out what'swrong!

Not exactly: Assuming you have Red Hat 6.0, try using the kppp utility for
connecting your modem to your ISP. It'll ask you for the login you need:
then try 'PAP or CHAP' instead of 'terminal-type'.

I got the same problem: my modem seem to get into the connection, but 40
seconds later and it finished with NO CARRIER; after taking a look to the
'how to hook up the ppp connection', and looking at the /var/log/messages
& /ppp/, I realized that PAP is what I needed. That's it!

Otherwise, try to run linuxconf, go to networking and ppp/slip/plip; then
configure your ppp0, choosing or avoiding PAP...
