If you want to recompile the kernel you must have the sources
installed. To see if you have them do a rpm -q kernel-sources In not,
then install them via XWindows-comtrol panel->package config. After this
do a cd /usr/src/linux and from there type make config This will start a
small script whic will ask you a lot of questions about what you want to
have in your kernel. After this do a make dep and a make clean. Then do
a make zIamge and make modules , then make modules_install and make zlilo.

To put a background picture on the desktop you have to do issue
this xv -root whateverimage.jpg -quit
If you want this to happend every time you start XWindows, you should put
this in the .xinitrc file in your dir.

Use 'make xconfig' or 'make menuconfig' in replace of the regular line
prompting 'make config.' It may seem like a minor detail, but for a new
user, this is a major improvement.
