I am thinking about becoming an ISP in my local
area. I am running redhat 6.1. What software do
I need do I need to achieve my goal.

If someone can steer me to some documentation I
would appreciate it :)

Thanks

I think that would depends on what services will you offer. Basically,
you'll need to setup a router/gateway, dns and mail servers. You may
install a proxy server if you want to. RedHat 6.1 has all this services.

You can setup your linux box to have your users dial into it. But
I think this is not the best one for an ISP. I suggest you purchase
a special device for remote access (i.e Baynetworks Remote Annex)

Cheers and Good luck
Carlo

I have been using Lucent (bought out Livingston and most everybody else) PM3s
for quite a while now and am very satisfied with the quality of the product
as well as the customer service provided for said hardware. You can get
radiusd for linux which will handle the authentication for the terminal
servers. Your biggest hardware problem will be disk I/O. We (my employer)
recently had a problem with an e450 hitting a load average of 48 during peak
hours with over 20k users (in one city) checking their email. The real
problem wasn't processor power it was I/O wait states (and that was with a
Raid5 fiber channel disk array). Just my 2 cents....

Cheers,
