I don't want to start in flame wars here, but I would like to get some
sound advice on a good motherboard, CPU, and BIOS.

For the last two weekends I have been trying every combination consieveable
to install RedHat 5.1 on my Pentium 90. The motherboard is from Antec,
uses an Intel i430FX chipset, and the BIOS is from Award Software (4.50PG).

I want to run Linux on that PC. It doesn't have to have NT with it. It
can be pure Linux.

So, would someone please make some suggestions about what motherboard/CPU
combination I should get.

BTW the problem has been the same all along. After I make all my changes
in fdisk and select "done" I get a "signal 8" error when the system tries
to write the file system to disk.

Any advice appreciated.

Thank you,
Doug

*** Douglas,

This question has been comming back a lot of times on this list. For long
time members it's a bit frustrating to see this type of demands appear
over and over again. You should check the RH archives; they'll be full
with all kind of info on this. However, to get you in the right direction:

It seems to me that the combo with the most success on this list is the
FIC 503+ MB with 1Mb cache and an AMD chip. I'm not sure the BIOS makes a
lot of difference. The FIC has an Award and it runs perfectly.

Cheers,
Zoran.

A good and not very expansive mother board is "seattle" motherboard or SE440BX
motherboard. It is quite simple design, small ATX style motherboard that can
handle PII up to 450Mhz.
