This is the first time I am trying Linux Red Hat 9.0 version and I was able
to install it as a server. Configured Samba and was able to test it within
the same PC just by using the smbclient //servername/service -U command and
the smbstatus. I was able to browse the net, FTP and telneted out.
Please understand, yes, I know telnet and ftp is not safe and open to eaves
droppers but that is not my concern right now.
Here is the issue I am experiencing:
- tried to telnet from another PC to my new Linux box and this what
happened:
H:\>telnet athlon-pcx
Connecting To athlon-pcx...Could not open a connection to host on port 23 :
Conn
ect failed
- tried FTP'ng:
H:\>ftp athlon-pcx
> ftp: connect :Connection reset by peer
ftp>
So far, I have edited the hosts.allow file and just put ALL: ALL thinking
that this should take care of it, renamed hosts.deny to something else and
even created a hosts.equiv file and still no dice. I have read the man pages
for hosts_access and thought I did what it was suggesting but I am still not
having any success.
Any help in this matter is much appreciated.
TIA

Default is to install and turn it on a medium setting, IIRC. Use those
commands to determine the status.
