I believe he is saying it looks normal, and then goes south after a
day or so.

On *most* of the SPARCstation 2 machines I've seen this with, verifying that you had both a sun disklabel /and/ a third partition as type whole disk, spanning the disk, fixed the problem.

Thanks for the info.

I also emailed Seagate, kind of assuming I wouldn't hear from them in
days ( a bit cynical om my part), but amazing enough I got a reply later
that day and they mailed me a url of software compatibility and it had
all Linux as being compatible.

It's a DAT drive, I'm not sure about the pin number, I saved off the
website's page on technical specs somewhere, that info should be on it.

Thanks again.

Okay, I am new, so plz bare with me.

I have installed a GNOME workstation.

The network card works, as we can connect to the internet with it (through
our router).

But I am having difficulty ftp-ing to it!

What do I need to do get Anonymous FTP working.

I have tried the following
rpm -ivh anonftp-2.8-1.i386.rpm
this came back
error: failed dependencies:
ftpserver is needed by anonftp-2.8-1

What now???

Also, I seem to be stuck in 640x480 mode.
When I run setup then x configurator, it correctly identifies my card but
when it tries to test the card it locks up!!! Sheesh!

Thx for your help!

Darren

I have two sound cards on my computer and I really
would like to have both configured and working for me.
Is it possible? If so, how?

The cards are:
- SoundBlaster 16 (with a Roland daughterboard on it)
- CMEDIA CM8338 (integrated in the motherboard)

Thanks.

Well, I just built 2.2.15 and installed it on the system which was having
the
problems, and the CD player now works just fine with audio CD's. Thanks for
the suggestion to whomever recommended it!!!

I would guess this will also fix the problem for the rest of you...

Install the package wu_ftpd thats the ftp server, you may want to get the
latest one from updates.redhat.com for security reasons.

What kind of video card is it? and have you tried XF86Setup ?

Everyone has headed into all kinds of directions... Evan is hosting the
Linux forum at Ziff-Davis, I dunno about Bruce, David Bandel is back at
Caldera's list after a hiatus, Donnie's cube is just up and over from
mine here at Red Hat, where I now work in Tech Support. Dep is busy with
KDE and their email list. Rick Forrester is here, as you noticed.

How about:
#!/usr/bin/perl

if($_[0] ne "")
{
$Instring=$_[0];
}
else
{
$Instring="AAAABCCCDD";
}

print("Instring is [$Instring]\n");

while($Instring =~ /(.)(\1{2,})/)
{
$Original=$1.$2;
$Replacement=$1.'!'.length($Original);
print("Replacing [$Original] with [$Replacement]\n");
$Instring =~ s/$Original/$Replacement/g;
}
print("Outstring is [$Instring]\n");

Instring is [AAAABCCCDD]
Replacing [AAAA] with [A!4]
Replacing [CCC] with [C!3]
Outstring is [A!4BC!3DD]

The magic is in the /(.)(\1{2,})/, which says "match any character, store
it in $1 and \1. Then match two or more of the character you matched in
\1".

You could probably do it in one line. If you man perlre, there's a way to
evaluate an expression within an re. If you use this, you can evaluate
the length of the original string right in the re, and do an s/ instead of
an /. However, I'm currently getting paid for actually doing work the
company asked me to work on, so I think I'm gonna leave it at that.

install ftpserver like it sez, anonftp depends on ftpserver being
installed first. rpm is your friend.

Grab Xfree86-3.3.6 from rawhide, you'll be doing some large dnloading,
but it resolves many many issues. Enjoy! Ric

A strange thing happened on my 5.2 box when I went from runlevel 3 to 1 and
later back to 3. The virtual console (tty1) I used to switch runlevels is
now echoing '^M' to the screen when I hit the enter key, making it
impossible to login. The other virtual terminals are working fine, but I'm
wondering what's causing this and if there's a solution. I've tried
killing the mingetty process for tty1 and commenting tty1 out of
/etc/inittab, telling init to re-read inittab, uncommenting tty1 and
re-reading inittab again, all to no avail.

Anyone know what's causing this and if there's a solution or work around?

IBM has released JFS for LINUX now under it's Open source program, it has a feature that will allow it to
grow across
as many partitions/disk as you can install, I use it under OS/2!!!! (it is based on the AIX FS)

Everywhere I have seen /www/httpd is an alias.

That's what exec *is*. `man exec` (for the C function Perl calls) yields:

DESCRIPTION
The exec family of functions replaces the current process
image with a new process image.

`perldoc -f exec` says:

The C<exec()> function executes a system command I<AND NEVER RETURNS>

If you want a program that repeatedly exec's while continuing to run in the
background, you need to have it fork() off a child each time it want to do
this, and exec() in the child.

Subject: Weird behavior on installs (6.1 dies, 5.2 works)

Ok, I've been getting some pretty funky behavior here, and wanted to ask if
anyone else is getting it. I've today been given a bunch of new (old)
machines to turn into trusty Linux workstations. To that end, I've been
creating working on Schroeder, Rerun, and Patty. Schroeder is a P75, with
16 Meg of RAM and a 750 Meg HD. Rerun is a P133 with 32 Meg RAM and a 1.2
Gig HD. I haven't touched Patty yet (and if someone is keeping track, yes,
I do have machines named after Peanuts characters... Linus (the first Linux
machine we had, dual named for both Peanuts and Linus Torvalds), Charlie
(Brown), Woodstock (a Beowulf), Pigpen, Rerun, Schroeder, (Peppermint)
Patty, etc.)

I have a very eclectic set, but all the machines are either at RH5.2 stock,
RH5.2 with some enhancements, RH6.1 stock, or up-to-date RH6.1 (using
AutoRPM). I've been installing new machines as 6.1 ever since I first
converted Linus to 6.1 from 5.2. However, with Schroeder I got a major
error... during the install, the machine reported that I had very little RAM
(that's true... Schroeder has half as much as the next smallest) and so it
needed to immediately create the swap drive. No problem. It then started
to read the packages on the disk, and crashed. Not a little crash, a big
honking "Something is seriously wrong with Python" crash. Ok, Schroeder is
old, it's small, maybe it just is defective... can happen, one node on my
Beowulf (Woodstock) repeatedly barfs and freezes after being up for >30
minutes. One machine that I started on never even POSTs, so that's
obviously garbage... and Woodstock proper (the Master) just died with a
hardware failure three days ago. However, I then tried it on Rerun..... and
got the identical results. Now this looks suspicious! I've created 5
machines to date with 6.1, with the smallest having 40 megs of RAM.... so I
tried 5.2 on Rerun... and it worked. I could put a 5.2 install on, while
6.1 dies. I then tried to upgrade the install from 5.2 to 6.1.... same
thing.

Why does 5.2 work when 6.1 doesn't???? Anyone have a clue? Anyone know how
to upgrade? We like 6.1 MUCH better for Workstations (Rerun is a
workstation-to-be) than 5.2, though 5.2 is fine for nodes on the Beowulf, so
this is kind of important.
