Hello:

Thanks for the suggestions; I was able to get the system working with
sndconfig after all.

One final thing, when I run "acm" (a flight simulator) it abends saying
"Sound is not available..." (yet I can cat an *.au file to /dev/audio as a
non-privileged user). There doesn't appear to be anything in the man
pages, and there doesn't appear to be any other documentation
provided...

Try something like:

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
read only = no
preserve case = yes
short preserve case = yes
create mode = 0775

1. Try another card.

2. Try to bring up the interface by hand with:

/etc/syconfig/network-scripts/ifup ifcfg-eth0

3. If that fails, note the error message.

4. If the system is booting, scan the log for the ethn initialzation and
see if there is any help there. Look for something like:

Apr 20 08:17:15 recover kernel: loading device 'eth0'...
Apr 20 08:17:15 recover kernel: eth0: EtherExpress at 0x340, IRQ 5,
Interface 10baseT, 32k

5. Try an append statement in the lilo boot, such as:

append = "ether=10,0x210,0,0,eth1 ether=5,0x330,0,0,eth0"
(this is for one of my servers with two nics)
The sentax is [append = "ether=IRQ,IOADD,0,0,INTERFACE#]

Good luck.........

Well, 2^31 = 2147483648. I'm new to Linux, but not Unix, but I'd say
you hit the file size limit of the OS. Linux on intel is 32bit. It
looks like the file size is a signed integer of 2^31. Someone please
correct me if needed.

My question is, is there a way around this in Linux? HP, for example,
had extensions that allowed file sizes much larger than 2gig on their
32bit implementation. If Linux is to make its way into the enterprise,
such limitations will need to be delt with.

There are a couple of ways to do what you need at an ISP.
1) Make sure you have domainaliases configured via the sendmail.cf option
(or perhaps it is standard in the latest release of sendmail?) so that
webm...@abc.com and webm...@bcd.com can co-exist.

2) Use the domainaliases function described above to send all mail for
customer.com to a certain local account - as in
*@customer.com: localacct
This would then require a third party program that could act as both a pop
client and a pop server - I believe there is a program called cmail for
about $500 that you could sell your customers that does this. Exchange
can NOT do it (as of 5.0 at least).

3) More fun yet... the best solution for exchange. Give them a static
IP, but NOT a dedicated connection. Make their static IP (usually
unreachable) the main MX record, with a value of, say, 10. Then make YOUR
email server the second MX, with a higher value (100). I believe this
configuration would have you NOT include customer.com in your
sendmail.cw.
This causes your server to queue the mail and try it every
configureablevalue minutes to send it to there server.
You then add a script on the customer side which, every x minutes,
establishes the dial up connection, runs the exchange connector to send
any outgoing smtp mail, and runs the etrn program (third party available)
which basically telnets to your mailhost:25, and runs ETRN customer.com.
This causes your mail queue to try and purge immediately instead of every
configurablevalue minutes. At this point, the primary MX is up and the
mail will be delivered.
It works best with ISDN of course, where you can count on a fast connect
time. If they are a $19.95/month regular connection I'd imagine they dont
deserve domain email.

Installing mrtg.

You need to install GD before you install MRTG. I am using
RedHat 4.2 in the machine running mrtg, and the RPM's
involved are:

gd-1.2-1.i386.rpm
mrtg-2.2-1.i386.rpm

and you have to install them in that order or mrtg will fail
the dependency test.

Next step is to go to the /home/httpd/html/mrtg directory,
which should have installed when mrtg was put in. Basically
follow the directions given in the docs, and create your
own mrtg.cfg file and put it there.

There is an included program called "cfgmaker", that when
executed will create the skeletal portion that you need
for the cfg file. Example:

prompt# /usr/local/bin/cfgmaker cisco.nook.net
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
use 'locate' to find the exact path, I am not sure on this one!

However, I am attaching my mrtg.cfg file if you need it, as
it has portions already working for the Cisco 1601, Cisco 2501,
Livingston Portmaster PM2e-( and the Pair Gain Megabit modem.

Now, let us say that you are starting out, and need to create
a new interface, say to a router called "cisco.nook.net". You
run cfgmaker to get the stuff, or copycat my cfg file. But
before it will work you have to create the subdirectory or it
will bomb out.

prompt# mkdir /home/httpd/html/mrtg/cisco

Then you run the mrtg program. Again, not sure of the path,
so check with locate:

prompt# /usr/local/bin/mrtg /home/httpd/html/mrtg.conf

note you have to supply mrtg with the path to the cfg file!

Now the program will run once with a bunch of error messages
but will create a bunch of gifs and
things in the 'cisco' subdirectory. CD to the cisco
subdir and delete all the gifs. Yes. prompt# rm *.gif

next run the program manually at least two more times, and
each time there should be fewer error messages until they all
dissapear! Once there are no more error messages, you then
add the required entry in /etc/crontab per the docs. Installing
the rpm should have installed the entry, but doublecheck to
make sure. Also, it is kinda handy, when yhou are in the
testing stage, to comment out the crontab entry if it was installed
there by the rpm, or else the damn things runs when you don't
want it to.

I understand that both gd and mrtg are available as rpm's for
the newer RedHat 5.1 release, but I have not tested them there.

Thanks (and to James Youngman too). That came from a different package.
rpm -qa | grep sendmail showed I have sendmail-8.9.0-5kgc,
sendmail-doc-8.8.8-0 and sendmail-cf-8.8.8-0. I did not realised I had
installed the last 2 . And I made my sendmail rpm to also install the cf
directory and the docs - didn't even think of making a separate rpm
for cf and docs.

After reading much of the traffic on this list I hesitate to ask a question
but here goes.

I am having trouble getting the normal console functions such as the
command history to work on a Wyse terminal. The TERM variable is correct
and the Wyse is listed it terminfo but the arrow keys do not trigger the
command history. If you could point me to a source of information on this I
would appreciate it. I have tried the RedHat install guide, Running Linux,
Linux Encyclopedia by WGS and Sams Teach yourself. I could not find a howto
on this but I might have over looked it.

I would appreciate any help you are willing to give. With 35 years in the

being forced to drop Interactive Unix and look for a new operating system
to run a system with 50 users on dumb terminals via Equinox ports.

I manage several systems and generally keep a telnet session open on a few
of them at at time. One thing that bugs me is when the telnet "times out"
and the connection is reset. Where do you adjust that time limit?

I generally do FTP backups of the various boxes. When the telnet times
out, the ftp connection dies as well. Now that one of the backups has
gotten in the 100 meg range, I have to hit the space bar on the keyboard
every so often to prevent the telnet from timing out just so I get the
tarball to finish the FTP.

Try adding the following to /etc/hosts.allow:

ALL: localhost

Does any one know if KDE and Staroffice would be incompatible for any reason.

I have installed Redhat 5.1, KDE 1.0 and I have downloaded the latest
staroffice.tgz file.

I also went out to the two sites mentioned waldherr.org etc to get the
instructions for installation.

Both this time and on an earlier attempt of installation about a week ago,
I have not been successful in getting the setup program to work.

The normal 'blue' install screen comes up both when done manually and when
using the rpm wrapper. But it only comes up for a second , and then I get
an error message coming up immediately for a file that it is looking for
and cant find (sorry I am on a machine at work while writing this that
doesnt have linux loaded on it so I cant remember the message right now).

In any case it is a message that comes up instantly after the blue install
screen becomes visible, and it prevents any further installation whatsoever.

Tried it twice at 2 separate times over two separate downloaded and same
symptoms both times.Other than KDE, have a relatively stock redhat linux
installation

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what might be causing this?

If not, I will resend email with exact error message when I get back to my
linux machine.

Thanks

I know a lot of repetitive questions have been posted on various RedHat
lists concerning installing StarOffice, but I've run into a couple of
problems no one has mentioned.

I've got StarOffice 4.0-SP3, staroffice-wrapper-4.0-5.i386.rpm, and
staroffice-wrapper-4.0-8.i386.rpm. I am running RedHat 5.1, with all
but the most recent errata applied.

When I run the 4.0-5 version of the wrapper, early in the process, a
message is displayed saying: find: invalid predicate `(No'

When I run the 4.0-8 version, I get as far as a new window that looks
like an MS setup window, but I immediately get an error message which
says: line 1: syntax error at token '|' expected declarator; i.e.
File...

Then, another error saying: Script error.

I realize I might just have to give up on the wrapper method of
installing, but I wanted to know if anyone can explain what is going on,
or has seen this themselves.

Thanks.

This is okay if the card comes up. If the card does not come
up during the boot process, it will give a message something
like "eth0 initialization delayed" but it flashes on screen
and the messages scroll off the screen and its hard to notice.

Most people then will get the login prompt and try to scroll
back using the <shift><pageup> keys. Either before you logged
in or after, it does not matter, the fact that the login prompt
appeared on screen has forever erased that message from your
screen. Along with a host of other messages.

It is erroneous to think that <shift><pageup> or 'dmesg' will
retrieve this stuff. It will NOT. They are gone. There is
only one way to see these messages, and that is to modify your
/etc/inittab file like this:

1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
^^^^^^^^^^^
add the '--noclear' directive, and you will be amazed at all
the stuff that you can see there now with <shift><pageup> that
you could not see before!

For the security conscious, I wish to add that if you are in a
place where your enemy has access to the console, they can
scroll back thru your work after you log off. In the case above,
this would apply to tty1, the first virtual console only.
Normally, when the "Login:" prompt appears, it clears the buffer
so <shift><pageup> will not show anything you did. --noclear
defeats this. You either need to do your work in a different
virtual console, or do a "clear" command before you log off.

Well, I didn't like the way the VPN HOWTO wanted you to do things.
It -should- be called SSH-VPN HOWTO... Anyways, check out CIPE
for a lower level (in the network stack, that is) method of doing
VPNs. I've gotten the tunnel up and working, but I'm having trouble
with routing isues (really just my own mental issues...). I think
when I've got my setup finished, I'm going to document and post it,
maybe submit it to the VPN HOWTO maintainer... Anyways, a VPN isn't
easy, be sure you know what you're getting into and not just doing
it for the buzzword value.

CIPE is at

I notice, on my previos post, that the attached mrtg.cfg
file shows up on my netscape displaying as normal html page
because it has html tags. Also, there seems to be a lack
of line endings.

However, if you download and save it, or you view it with
view-->document source then it looks just fine. Thought I
would mention this as I was horrified when I first looked
at my own post. Yikes! I am sure that a program like
pine will properly display the attachement....
