The code format is in line with other if/else constructs in the same function,
which coincidentially also pass through checkpatch. Which you did not bother
checking either (neither the format of the code in lm90.c nor the results
of checkpatch over it).
Before making statements like this, you might want to consider spending some time
with the actual code - amongst others to see if the new code fits into the structure
of existing code.
If you want to improve code formatting in this or in other files, I would suggest
to submit patches.

Actually, I wrote that code, and I am a kernel coder. You may not like
it, but at the time it seemed the best way to keep the function
readable. This particular style allows for better placement of
comments, which are many in this function.
As long as checkpatch doesn't complain about it, I will not consider
changing it, and will reject any attempt to do so (simply by comparing
the readability before and after the patch and inevitably coming up to
the conclusion that the change isn't worth it.)

Sorry for the long silence, I was frightened by the long discussion
back then - it's only today that I went through it to find most of it
was actually noise.
I don't have major objections to the patch, only a few things which I
think could be improved. So it's OK that your picked the patch as is,
I'll submit incremental patches for comments and review.
Stijn, please accept my apologies for being way less reactive than I
should have been, being the lm90 driver maintainer. And big thanks to
