Sorry to cross post. I put this on the KDE list yesterday but no responses. As I run Kubuntu I thought that it would be a better place to start.

Starting yesterday morning both of my KDE machines no longer show a system title bar or border for Chrome, and only Chrome. All other apps are fine. Right clicking the Chrome tab area has a checkbox for 'Use system title bar and borders' but it does nothing. Chrome version 94.0.4606.54.

Losing the title bar means losing (as far as I know) the ability to pin an instance of Chrome to all virtual desktops which I use for browser streamed media - YouTube, Netflix, etc. I've switched that window to Firefox for the time being.

As Gentoo is usually a bit further forward I wondered if anyone here using Chrome and KDE has seen this issue?

Thanks,
Mark

Mine is also missing the title bar. However the "Use system
title bar and borders" /does/ restore the normal title bar for me. This
is also version 94.0.4606.54 on KDE.

Thanks Steve.  Glad to know at least it works for you.

Kubuntu updated Chrome this morning but the problem still exists.

Assuming user error on my part, do you or anyone else reading know of any KDE
System Settings that might tell KDE not to use system title bars on a certain
application window? Maybe something got set or tweeked that's causing
this problem?

Sadly still no response on the KDE list.

Thanks,
Mark

I use Fluxbox and had the same issue. Found this today:

https://piunikaweb.com/2021/09/23/google-chrome-94-use-system-title-bar-and-borders-checkbox-broken/

To fix the problem:

<start>

you will need to head over to the chrome://flags page and find the
“use-ozone-platform” setting.

Make sure to change it from default to disabled, restart your Chrome
browser and you will be good to go."

<end>

I can confirm that this worked for me here.

It seems to be a Google Chrome bug that is fixed / being fixed in the
next version (also from the above link).

I have NOT tried this fix on KDE.

Not a solution, but a workaround:
I’ve been using keyboard shortcuts for this kind of function for many years.

Super+A = Window on all desktops
Super+F = Fullscreen
Super+Shift+F = Toggle window border
Super+S = Shade window
Super+T = Window on top
...

Excellent idea. Thanks.

It seems (via Stack Overflow) that this is a Chrome problem but not a Chromium problem. Being that I sync bookmarks with Chrome across Linux, Windows and Android it would be a stretch to move to Chromium. I did determine that Chromium on my Linux machine is fine, and I set Firefox to load on monitor#3 so I have a solution, but I will test your idea.

Thanks,
Mark

Worked like a charm Frank. Thanks very much.

One individual on AskUbuntu says the problem is fixed in a
beta release of Chrome but your solution works for all apps
which is nicer.

Cheers,
Mark

Fixed it for me (openbox).

Same here, but I don't have any "desktop environment". I just use the
openbox window manager.

At least they fixed the bug where dragging a tab to form a new window
resulted in a window that didn't stay where it was dropped: instead it
used to follow the mouse around until you hit a key.

Same here

Version 94.0.4606.61 (Official Build) (64-bit)

The 'Use system title bar and border' options still works fine in
Chromium Version 94.0.4606.54 (Developer Build) (64-bit)

Kubuntu got a chrome-stable update today but it didn't fix this problem. New
revision is 94.0.4606.71. Can anyone who saw this problem fixed respond with
the revision?

Thank in advance,
Mark

Actually, it is fixed but for anyone who might run into this there was a recommendation
somewhere along the way to enable Ozone in the chrome://flags section. I had done
but hadn't looked at my log file which apparently were filling up with ozone error
messages every 3 seconds or so.

I disabled the ozone flag and now I have KDE title bars.

Sorry for the noise. Hope the extra info saves someone so time later one.

Cheers,
Mark

The interim fix was to _disable_ the ozone flag.

I don't remember seeing any recommendation to enable it.

> I disabled the ozone flag and now I have KDE title bars.

Doing that is what fixed it for me.
