Hello all.
I am in the process of setting up my new Gentoo install has a mail
server and am noticing I have a choice of Cyrus or Courier IMAP server.
~ Can anyone suggest which one I go with?
I want to be able to access my mail via PINE (not sure if either of the
above makes a difference there), and I am going to be using a
fetchmail->procmail setup to receive and de-spam my incoming mail.
The system I am running on is an old K6-500 which handled my mail and
routing just fine in the past, but might be starting to show its age.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I have found that courier imap was easier to configure... I suggest you
to use courier.

Cyrus is usually used to create sealed servers. Meaning that there are
no actual user accounts on the mail server, only mail accounts. Cyrus
has its own way of storing messages and authenticating users. Its
commonly used in environments where its not desirable to give all mail
users a unix account. Its also pretty fast and efficient.
Courier is a good choice if you want all mail users to have unix
accounts. It can do Maildir delivery, its fairly simple to setup and
use.
I cant say for sure, but I dont think pine can do cyrus. At least not
natively. If pine supports imap, then it'll probably be fine. Its been
years since I used pine, so I'm not really sure what the state of its
features are.
From what you describe, you're probably best off going with the courier
imap route. This way you could use pine/mutt on the box where mail gets
delivered, and also any other imap client remotely.

hi nicholas,

you could use UW-IMAP, too.

i use courier-imapd, just because i also use courier-esmtpd & courier-pop3d.
it works well and i really like it.
however, i suggest you take some time (around 1 hour min.) and read this
website:
http://www.courier-mta.org/fud/
it is where sam, the author of courier, states some interesting things about
current imap-implementations, server- and client-side.
no, i don't get any money for this :P
sincerely,

I use courier-imap and it's pretty great. Takes 5 mins to install and
configure and then you're good to go.
