I have an adaptec 2940UW which has an IBM 68 pin HD and a 80 pin HD on it
that work fine. When I connect my new SCSI CD burner to it via the internal
50 pin plug, I notice that not all three pieces get recognized at boot
up--sometimes one, sometimes two, and sometimes all three. I have the two
HDs set to ID 1 and 2. I HAD the CDROM set to 3, but thought it was
interfereing, so I changed it to ID 4. With this change or ID, it got
better at identifying all three pieces, but the CDROM is not recognoized
from time to time. What can I do to change this short of getting the CD
burner on the same 68 pin cable?

You're probably either violating SCSI bus topology rules, or your
termination is fscked up or both. SCSI must be configured linearly with
termination on both physical ends of the bus. There can be no branches.

If you post a description (a diagram helps) of the physical connections
you're using including what cables are going into what ports, what devices
are attached where on what cables, and where termination is happening,
then it should be relatively simple to fix the problem.
