scanmaker E3 and adaptec 2940

I'm having problems with my Microtek Scanmaker E3 and Adaptec 2940 SCSI
controller. The aic7xxx module loads fine on boot, and doing a cat
/proc/scsi/scsi shows my scanner is connected. SANE finds the scanner
without a problem (/dev/sga and /dev/scanner->/dev/sga). I have set, per
the Microtek website, the host adapter (the 2940) to disable sync
negotiation, max transfer rate 5M/s, and disable disconnect.

However, when I run scanimage to test the scanner or attempt to scan an
image, it hangs after beginning the scan (it stops at about an inch). I
eventually get (usually after switching the scanner off then on) a 'FAIL
Error: Device busy' message.
Any ideas?
