Well that wasn't it. I upgraded to 2.2.18, built and installed the
latest
SANE and Xsane and all of the frontends hang right after the scan
starts.

strace says that /proc/sys/kernel/sg-big-buff doesn't exist but I
modified
SG_SCATTER_SZ in /usr/include/scsi/sg.h before compiling the kernel and
SANE.
Perhaps the sg module and sane don't agree on the buffer size?

Shouldn't need to - I don't have it on my machine and it works fine.

Are you dead sure you've got the chain set up right? Termination both
ends, good cables, etc?

Also, I haven't used one of those cards in a good long while - is
there a way to turn off device disconnect, scatter/gather or tagged
command queueing on the card? Try turning all the options off or down
as far as they will go, hopefully down to synchronous 5.0MBps comms.

If you could mail the relevant bits of the strace output, I'll take a
look and see what I can see.

One more thought - is your system one of those that has kernel source
in /usr/src/linux and makes /usr/include/linux a symlink to
/usr/src/linux/include? If so, you're compiling against the wrong libc
& kernel headers; see
