I'm trying to understand this concept!
I'm building a server. This server will have 2-80GB IDE Harddrives.
I want to build a RAID array in stripe mode for optimal performance.
I bought a Gigabyte GA-7VRX Motherboard. This motherboard has 4 ide ports
on it and a
promise RAID chipset. Three of the ide ports are green. They are labeled
ide1, ide2, ide3
and ide4. Ide2 is white.
Here's my assumption:
ide1 and ide2 are merely ide ports for regular setups. Ide3 and ide4 are
the RAID/ATA
controller ports. Then by going into the BIOS and setting the Onboard
Promise Chip to
"RAID" that I could boot up to the hard drive array on ide3 and 4.
But instead the promise startup comes on and detect the hard drive and just
freezes.
Absolutely nothing happens after that.
So what I've done is put the two hard drives on ide1 and 2 and booted up.
This time the
promise startup comes up and finds the hard drives and tells me to hit
ctrl+F to get into
the configuration utility. It lets me in, but then it flashes to me that
the hard disk
cannot be found. check power and cable connection.
So what I've tried is:
connecting a WD 6.4 gig hard drive to ide3. Promise now lets me in AND
configure as I wish
besides the fact that it shows but one hard drive in the stripe array (the
WD hd).
So all in all, I am confused as can be. Can someone please shine some light
on this?
Thank you so much for your input!

Hi Michael,
I have no hands-on experience of RAID, but I have read a little out of
curiosity, (When I win that lottery tho'... L O O K O U T ! ! !)
Well worth browsing through this article....

I notice other replies to this group recently referring to:

I've had a quick look, and if the answer is not here, the question doesn't
exist! (Must take the time to read this!)
Have fun!
