Modem Initialization trouble

I'm having modem problems, and I'm using slackware, with the KDE interface,
and kppp to connect. My problem is, is that when I try to connect it says
"modem ready" then it says "Initializing modem..." and then it just hangs
there forever. what is it doing when it is "Initializing modem..", what I
mean is, what do I need to change in my configuration?

I'm using a 56 internal Viking 56R-SM2 modem, which I can get to work under
windows. Please help
