Does anyone know of a decent Linux-supporting UK freefone (unmetered or
off-peak) ISP?

Currently I'm using BT Internet, and whilst kppp/DUN will connect to it on
their 0800 number, pppd/chat will not on my NTL/C&W line (the BT line works,
as does the 0845 number on NTL).

BTi's helpdesk said "nobody here knows anything about Linux" to which I
replied, "well surely your entire network runs on it?"!

I keep getting the dreaded "all had bit 7 set to 0", which I'm putting down
to all the crap that comes down the line when dialling into the BT 0800
number on a C&W line.

So, anyone got any recommendations, or know a way of blocking this crap from
the NTL line (can I hide the number I'm dialling from or something?)

I'm running VA Linux 6.2.1 and RedHat Linux 6.1 (both with 2.2.16 kernels and
pppd 2.3.11).

Cheers ;o)

You're extremely unlikely to find an ISP which offers *support* to Linux
users. Almost all will work since a PPP link is a PPP link no matter
what's in use. Currently I'm getting excellent results with the
Freeserve "Unlimited" GBP10/month option. Others mileage varies.

So the problem is apparently with your NTL line? What do the logs show
by way of clues?

The latter is quite unlikely. In any case BTi are terminally clueless
and most helpdesks are far from a satisfactory mechanism for resolving
problems which aren't covered by the operators' scripts.

Enable debugging and see what's happening before this message.

What "crap from the NTL line"? If you mean that the line is of poor
quality then surely it would be best to report this to NTL as a fault...

Oh, so there are two machines involved as well as two phone lines? You
really need to give more information if anyone is going to be able to
diagnose what's happening.

I've had success with both world online (screaming net) and freeserve;
just
get the phone number, password, and ip addresses of nameservers etc when
you register with them, configure ppp, and it works. In the past I
also got the yahoo 'free' isp to work, and btinternet. Personally I
don't recommend
world online at all now as they've just hit their customers with a
MASSIVE
rise in costs - but freeserve "time" looks pretty good, you get free
internet
calls as long as you make a tenner's worth of voice calls a month.
A really nice tool for configuring ppp is the "yawmppp" package, you can
get
it from freshmeat.

Hi there
You might look into UK2.net, they offer a dial up service from the UK.

A list of unmetered ISP's can be found here -
http://www.net4nowt.com/unmetered/index.htm

I don't think any of them activly support Linux, but most should work.
Your problem will be finding one that you can dial from an NTL (ex-C&W) line.
This excludes NTLWorld, and pretty-much every-one else.

NTL doesn't route these calls out of its' network.

In a recent thread (Problems with ppp) Colin Brough wrote

" the most common reason for the LCP timeout/not 8 bit clean messages
is that the chatscript doesn't end with:

CONNECT '\c'

This ensures that no other characters, not even CR or NL, are sent.
BTi's modem servers/PPP setup gets confused and often doesn't start
correctly unless this is true. "

This worked for me.

HTH, Simon.
