Do you have WinXP installed already. If you do and have some free
space on your hard drive you just need to install redhat normally and
it will take care of booting Windows for you. If you have windows
installed on your entire drive you need to resize your partition. Get
a unix distro that you can mount on a floppy and run the ntfsresize
tool to resize your partition.

I can tell you how I did it with Windows 2000 and Red Hat 8.0. I can't
imagine how it would be different with Windows Xtra Profit.

I had a full blown Windows 2000 work station, at work.

I booted the system from "Partion Magic" floppies.

Using Partition Magic, I shrank the 20 gig partion (which was the whole
disk) down to 10 gigs and left the rest unformatted. I saved the
changes.

Reboot.

Reboot again using the Red Hat installation CD.

Go through the normal install;USE DISK DRUID to allocate the partitions
per install instructions.

THIS IS WHERE NEWBIES SCREW UP: The Disk Druid menu will show your
Windows partition (FAT, NTFS...). DO NOT DELETE THIS PARTION! Use only
the unformatted portion of your disk to allocate the Linux Operating
System.

Continue with the install. Whether you use Grub or Lilo as you boot
manager, you will get the same result.

Once the Linux install is complete, reboot. Grub or lilo will bring up
a boot menu. You can chose either "DOS" or "LINUX" to boot to;
assumming you leave the boot labels on default.

If you install everything, Apache, MySQL, PHP should be there. On Red
Hat, chose custom installation and at the bottom of the options is
"install everything." If you're running a server, I wouldn't recommend
this, but if you were you wouldn't be dual booting!

Hi,

i think I'm of those newbies that screwed up but in a diff. way.

I install my RH 9 as above when I got to Disk Druid I did not delete
my windows partition. everything to be fine. so when I booted RH LILO
only shows Red Hat no windows anymore!. I dont know why. but this is
how I did it:

in windows I used Partitino Magic to cut my HD in half.
I let it boot up and do it's magic when it was done I boot up BUT I
did not boot to windows I boot up to RH CD (is this where I messed it
up?).

so now LILO does not want to see my windows partition and even when in
RH I can't see that partition.

How can I boot up to windows again? is not like I really need it but I
use it as a back up.

Thanks.

If your machine's boot sequence has CD before HD, then it will boot from
your RH cd. Simply take the cd out, you should get to grub or lilo. Hope
this help.

Does your windows partition still exist? I.E. can you read the files
from under redhat? If so it's likely just a matter of telling lilo
where to find windows. If the partition was hosed, then it looks like
you've got some extra space for linux, unless you keep good backups.

So if it exists, write an entry into lilo.conf for your windows partition,
or use whatever Redhat's config tool is (I use mandrake so im not
familiar with redhats GUI configuration utilities).
I do not have windows installed on my computer, so i don't know exactly
what the config entry should look like, but it's pretty straightforward
i'm sure. Just look up a lilo howto and then do it up.
