Hey,

I've got a box kicking around and not doing anything. I'm new to Linux but
would like to set up my own server. What do i need to know/do to get
started.

A new server?

Apache is a pretty funky web server. That'd be a start I guess. What
distribution are you running? 'cause if it's Debian... all you have to
do is something like >apt-get install apache. And follow any
instructions they give you. =)

You need some patience, some caffiene, and some dedication.
Actually, setting up servers isn't as hard as it seems.
Though it depends on what exactly you are trying to serve,
if you want to make a webserver check out:
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/WWW-HOWTO.html
but if you are looking for something else like file/print/app server or
WHATEVER you can think of, a great way to get some deep details in linux
is via the HOWTO files, all can be found here:
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html

Good Luck.
