preferred way to load module at boot time?

I've written a module for accessing a PCI card and I would like it to
load automatically at boot time. I know i can simply add a modprobe
command to my rc.d, but I'm wondering if I can get the hotplugging
framework to load it for me. I've read what I can find about this,
but I havent been able to get it to work, what is the minimum
requirement for a module to be hotplugged on bootup? and is this the
appropriate way to load my module?
