I am working on an HF modem development project under linux.
I have spent almost all of my time getting all of the signal processing
inside working but I need to get the sound card side right. I
have constant problems with esd, e, gnome, ksound, etc. getting in
the way of /dev/dsp and causing one or more things to break. For
example, even though I can clearly hear the signal coming in on
the SB AWE64 or PCI Ensoniq or SB16 or SBLive, all of which I own,
these daemons consistently caused the reading of data from /dev/dsp
to be fouled up in some way. The Creative PCI Ensoniq just hangs,
the rest download their merry way and the files are flat with zero
level input even though I can clearly hear the data on the input.

I need some how-to or clear and concise (I know that is a lot from
linux sound hackers) explanation of how to use these daemons, when
they are present, rather than fighting with them.
