I'm having trouble with the "standard" AX25 RPMs that shipped with
SUSE Linux 6.2.

Keep getting the following error:
cannot open the axports file

I've used this file on Red Hat 5.2 with no problems same permissions,
location (/etc/ax25/axports), etc. Even tried a symbolic link from
/usr/local/etc/ax25/axports this didn't work.

I've removed the RPMs except the AX25libs and loaded the source and
compiled per the README for the Makefile. This fixed the kissattach
"cannot open" error but the kissparms command then couldn't find it.
ARRRGGGHH!!

Don't know who created this RPM but they sure didn't test it!

Compiling the source code on Slackware was not only easier than this,
but it worked the first time, as the programs and file locations
matched all the man pages.

Any help will be appreciated guys.

Mike, Suse 6.2 uses kernel 2.2.x right?

I know when I went from Redhat 5.2 to 6.0 9also 2.2.x) I had to get new ax25
utils and build them.
On the other hand, using an SCC card I don't need any of this kiss stuff
anymore
with 2.2.x .
But I cannot recall problems with the axports file. You are sure it isn't 0
sized? This is read by ax25d I think. I can't remember whether I got a new
ax25d or not.
I'll try to find out tonight at home. Note that 2.2.x kernels have a bug
which will
not allows ax25d start the node program (you'll get errors from the node
program).
pms works fine. There's a patch for this for kernel 2.2.12 .

If spoken to nicely and intellegently any ISP should be willing to
help you set up a IP/IP gateway. This of course may require the power
and flexability of LINUX. If you are into challenges then go for it.
(I'm just such a person) Requires extensive knowledge on DNS, SMTP,
POP, PAP, PPP, and several LINUX hardware issues.

I haven't found many web sites that do a good job of explaining Ham
Radio in the LINUX community. It's mostly a loose knit group of guys
that enjoy playing with UNIX and protocol hacking. SuSe has finally
posted a fix for the problem I was having with the AX25 packages on
their web site.

A good source of packet / Linux info can be found by reading the
how-to files and misc data at:

They finally updated them, after I posted this message.
Thanks.

I still don't understand why recompiling the source code didn't work,
but I won't get on that soap-box here.
