debian-user:

I installed debian-live-11.1.0-amd64-xfce+nonfree.iso on a Dell Latitude
E6520 today:

2021-12-04 19:28:18 dpchrist@laalaa ~
$ cat /etc/debian_version ; uname -a ; dpkg-query -W firefox-esr
11.1
Linux laalaa 5.10.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.70-1 (2021-09-30) x86_64
GNU/Linux
firefox-esr 78.15.0esr-1~deb11u1

Firefox is not displaying icons for my add-ons in the toolbar -- HTTPS
Everywhere, NoScript, and Privacy Badger. I am unable to configure the
extensions without their icons (?).

Firefox on Debian 9 correctly displays icons for add-ons:

2021-12-04 19:32:16 dpchrist@tinkywinky ~
$ cat /etc/debian_version ; uname -a ; dpkg-query -W firefox-esr
9.13
Linux tinkywinky 4.9.0-16-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.272-2 (2021-07-19)
x86_64 GNU/Linux
firefox-esr 78.15.0esr-1~deb9u1

I tried customizing the toolbar, but the add-on icons are not available.

I tried deleting compatibility.ini, extension-preferences.json, and
extensions.json as recommended by FredMcD, but the icons are still missing:

Suggestions?

Hi David,

do you have reasons to use Firefox ESR?

I have been using Mozilla's builds for Forefox and I have been happy
with them. On the other hand, builds form Linux distributions lack of
support for non-free parts of Firefox like DRM and these builds don't
allow users to watch protected content like video and video streams.

So my advice is - use the builds from Mozilla.org, it seems that you use
AMD64 architecture which is supported architecture by Mozilla.org

Kind regards
Georgi

HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript, and Privacy Badger are new to me.

I just installed all of them with no error, three new icons as expected.

78.15.0esr (64-bit)
system installed with firmware-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso
Legacy mode
Mate desktop

That is a possibility, and I have done it in the past.

I am currently evaluating Brave:

Running firefox-esr 78.15.0esr-1~deb10u1 here.

Icons display fine here, but in any case, you should be able to
configure your add-ons from about:addons (or burger menu -> Add-ons, or
Ctrl-Shift-A).

Kind regards,
Andrei

I downloaded and installed firefox-95.0.1.tar.bz2 from Mozilla. The
Firefox extensions are working as expected, and the Firefox / Xfce
desktop stability problems seem to have gone away.

Unfortunately, this only seems to be true on the Dell Latitude E6520
(Optimus graphics) with Debian 9. On Debian 10, Amazon video locks up
within a minute to two. On Debian 11, Amazon video locks up within ~30
minutes.

David - there's a very similar set of queries on debian-laptop at the moment
also about a Dell E6520. Are you using one that has Nvidia graphics with the
Nvidia N4200M?

If so, you have it working using the Optimus packages?

I'll pass that info back when I receive confirmation - that may well
explain why the person in debian-laptop is having lockups.

All the very best, as ever,

debian-live-11.1.0-amd64-xfce+nonfree.iso appears to have installed
nouveau OOTB:

I moved the Debian 10 system disk to an Intel DQ67SW motherboard with an
Intel Core i7-2600S processor and Intel HD Graphics 2000. It played ~90
minutes of Amazon video flawlessly. I believe Debian 10 is now using
the i915 graphics driver (?):

All Intel IGPs made in more than the past two decades have depended on the i915
kernel device driver (module) for maximum Xorg performance since more than 15
years ago. Those older than about 2006 or so require the intel DDX[1] display
driver for Xorg (& Wayland?[4]). Newer ones can usually use either the intel DDX
display driver, or the newer technology modesetting DIX[2] driver, for maximum
performance in (either) X. All DDX drivers and the DIX driver depend on a loaded
hardware-specific kernel device driver that provides KMS[3] services.

[1] Device Dependent Xorg (display driver)
[2] Device Independent Xorg (Wayland; display driver)
[3] Kernel ModeSetting (Mode Setting)
[4] I have no idea whether Wayland is supported on older IGPs that require the
intel DDX.
