is there a good alternative to kaffeine? Since I ran dpkg-reconfigure
fontconfig-config and dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig, kaffeine only shows a
black window. It seems to be still working, just I can't do much with
it because the window is blacked out.
So far, I've tried mythtv, and I don't like it, and I tried vdr and
couldn't get it to work, probably because I'd need another TV card.
What I'm looking for is a way to record movies with my TV card,
preferably something that can run independent from X11.
Other than that, does anyone have an idea how to fix kaffeine?

Have you looked at VideoLAN? I'm not sure wether it can play/record from
TV cards (DVB-T) but if that options is available it is a good multimedia
program.
Mplayer can also work with DVB streams, I guess. And KPlayer could be
another option.

I would first start by launching kaffeine from another user to discard a
configuration problem.

Run "dpkg-reconfigure kaffeiene" :-)

You mean http://www.videolan.org/ ? They don't seem to be into TV cards
or recording at all.

Hm, yes, I forgot about mplayer. Quite a while ago, I tried to get it
to work with the TV card and gave up because it was impossible to get a
working channels.conf. The format of this file mplayer expects isn't
even documented anywhere. Other than that, it would basically work ---
and miss something to display the EPG and schedule recordings from it.
Or can mplayer do that, too?

It probably is one; I just don't know what to look at/for. I didn't
change the configuration of kaffeine or kaffeine itself in any way, so
there's no reason for it to be suddenly broken.

No? Then I may have dreamed it O:-)

Dunno, but there should be pre-made files for your country/region
elsewhere in Internet :-?

I don't know, I know mplayer is one of the most powerful media players
out there (used as the default backend for many other players), other
than that I can't tell :-)

Try it, creating a new user won't hurt, you can delete it afterwards. If
the new user has no problems with kaffeine, then you can start by
renaming (rename, never remove) kaffeine's user profile...

None I could find ... At least I've now managed to create one that
works.

Yeah, and it's hard to figure out how to do what you want with it. I
always used it for watching because it supports vdpau and had kaffeine
for recording only.

Hm, renaming ~/.kde out of the way helped. It might be fun to write
some GUI using mplayer for watching TV and maybe recording with libsx.

Yep, it's what I consider a jack-of-all-trades app :-)
But now that I know it was not a dream¹, you can reconsider VideoLAN.
Yes, it should be able to handle DVB-T² cards ;-)

It still seems to be the only one supporting vdpau. Hm. Perhaps I can
write an emacs mode for using mplayer; that would be an interesting
exercise to learn elisp. Recording seems to be rather difficult,
though, and I'm not watching live tv anymore ...

Thanks for the pointers. It seems pretty complicated.
