I am trying to install XFree86 4.1.x from SID. My VGA card is a
S3 Trio 64 UV+ with 1MB V-Ram. I would like to know whether this
card is supported in 4.1.x. It was working fine with Xfree86 3.3.6.
I get a low resolution and half screen display on installing
xserver-xfree86.
With warm regards

See: http://www.xfree.org/4.1.0/Status28.html#28
and: http://www.xfree.org/current/Status28.html#28
So it's supported in 4.2.0, not in 4.1.x.

Dear Elmar,
I have a doubt. I had installed Caldera as well as RHL 7.1
on my machine at different times. They also have Xfree86
version 4.x (not ver 4.2). I could configure my S3 Trio
SVGA card in those distros easily. But then why my debian
sid shows probs.
Yesterday I tried this ( as root)
# XFree86 -configure
# XFree86 -XF86config ~/XF86Config.new
# cp /root/XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
# startx
My machine hung up and had to reboot (ctrl+alt+del worked)
Pls help me
Regards

Sorry, don't know. I don't have this card and I don't know what the
problem is. I only looked at the xfree86 webpages.
Maybe Caldera and RH added device drivers for your card...
Bye,
