Its quite a complex tool and there are volumes written about how to
use it. Even some examples in the manpage. However... I have not
understood very much of it. No doubt due to a deep seated stupidity.
I finally just resorted to trying any commands from the manpage or
google that seemed to be about my objective.
My objective is to have a panning desktop. That is, a size that is
larger than my monitor by a fair bit.
After tinkering exessively, I'm no nearer to having that panning
desktop than before, although I've created some interesting setups and
very odd setups.
It would seem that a command like this:
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --panning 2880x1800
or maybe this:
xrandr --fb 1024x768 --output DVI-I-1 --panning 3600x2250
would come pretty close.
Both of those change the screen a small amount just enough for the
mouse pointer to disappear at any border but only just barely.
I want a lot more panning than that. But I'll be darned if I can
really follow how this is supposed to work... I'm sure there is some
tried and true way to do this.
Of the dozens of other combinations I've tried some give an error
like:
,----
| X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
| Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
| Minor opcode of failed request: 29 (RRSetPanning)
| Serial number of failed request: 30
| Current serial number in output stream: 30
| HOST:reader ~
`----
Words like `BadMatch' would seem to indicate there is some way to
arrive at (mathmatically) parameters that are not a BadMatch. But I
am not getting it.
I have high hopes that someone here will know how it is done or at
least be able to put me on the right track.
It all starts with the command `xrandr' <by itself> to show what mode
the screen is currently at and what the output device name is so I'm
inlining that output below along with the output of xwininfo: But
first a little equipment info:

Are you sure?
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid \n \l
And I definitely do not have any packages installed from unstable or
experimental...
Kind regards,

I'm not sure what problem you are having with threading. Your previous
reply that I responded to (the response you are quoting here) has the
Reference header in the full headers that show it was a response to
your prior post:

My post that you quote here has References header:

Note your message-ID there. That indicates the post you quote here
was a response to your message-id: <4E86955F...@gmail.com>.
That is, it is exactly as it should be. What do you read with?.
For me this thread is normally threaded. (I use emacs/gnus)

No, not mixing.

Yes, you've mentioned that several times now... I've tried to include
as much as I was asked for... sorry if it did not meet expectations.

Yes I know they would be smaller... that is what I'd like to see.
I'm using the standard fonts that are installed with xorg and gnome
desktop. I'm not using the gnome desktop. I use fluxbox, but I
believe the same fonts are used.
I'm not really sure what drivers are being used. T think it is
Nouvea. I see that mentioned in Xorg.log, and have included Xorg.log
at the end. Several modules are mentioned. I'm not sure how to
interpret all that. I see several modules loaded. There is probably
some handier way to get the information but I don't know it.
I've fired up gnome desktop and have this information from
Settings/Appearance fonts tab:
Application font: sans 7
Document font: sans 7
desktop: sans 7
Window title: Sans Bold 8
Fixed width monospace 9
Monochrom [], Best contrast [], Best shapes [] and Subpixel smoothing [x]
I have Subpixel Smoothing turned on as you see above, but honestly I
see no differnce no matter which of those I select.
The `details' button shows 96dpi

Thanks for the tip. But I'm not sure what the command syntax would
be. I'm guessing:
xrandr --fb 1440x900 --output DVI-I-1 --panning 1680x1050
If that is it, then it fails here:
xrandr --fb 1440x900 --output DVI-I-1 --panning 1680x1050
xrandr: specified screen 1440x900 not large enough for output TV-1 (720x576+1440+0)
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 29 (RRSetPanning)
Serial number of failed request: 32
Current serial number in output stream: 32
I'm not sure how to change the TV setting. Or even if it can be
changed to accommodate that command.
Trying:
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --panning 1680x1050
That shakes the screen a bit, and the mouse can now disappear slightly
at the edges, but as reported in the bug...it appears that panning is
being blocked.
As you've noted there is a bug that might prevent panning in any case.

I didn't quite follow what you meant by "(with new mode creation)".
So you are able to do panning then? At least on a netbook.
I'll be glad to hear of any testing you may do latter on.
For me there is no urgency... but I'd like to get it setup eventually.

They are - unless you specifically change them.

The proprietary driver has problems with panning.
I don't know which version of libxrandr2 you are running (I use 1.3)

That is usual. (multiple modules, difficult to interpret)

I assume you mean the DejaVu family.

It makes a slight difference - it also means you have anti-aliasing
enabled (I suspect that's default).
It doesn't appear that you are running TrueType fonts which make more
use of subpixel rendering.
I wouldn't worry about it until you stop running the vesa video driver.

I'm not sure why you have trouble with the fonts - all those settings
seem about normal for people with normal vision.

what do you get from:-
$ xrandr --output default --dryrun --mode 1440x900 --panning 1680x1050
if no errors, try without the dryrun parameter
if you get error codes please post - if screen refreshes (without
printing errors) but doesn't seem to pan, try Ctrl++ or Ctrl+-
(this may also work:-
$ xrandr -s 1440x900 --dryrun --panning 1680x1050)
NOTE: I haven't done the virtual screen/VRAM math - your card doesn't
have a lot of VRAM and you do want big screens....

try:-
$ xrandr --output 'TV-1' --dryrun --mode 1024x768
if *no* errors (probably will be due to a output name problem) *then*
try without the dryrun parameter.
Might have to create a minimal xorg.conf for that...

2 pixel variation in screen width and height? If so that's the bug in v1.3.2

xrandr can only use existing modes - either those detected by X on boot
(shown in /var/log/Xorg.0.log) or those written in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
cvt is used to determine valid modes - to use those that X doesn't know
about, xrandr creates them using the newmode or addmode parameters.

Yes.

That log makes little sense to me - where you modifying settings during
this particular session?
If so please:-
boot up your box
login (and startx)
$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > ~/xorg.log
attach xorg.log to post.
I haven't had a chance to test on identical hardware today - perhaps
later in the week. I won't be able to test with the same Debian release
- so I won't be able to guarantee it'll work :-(
Cheers

Just as a point of information the Ubuntu version number should be
"11.04". As Ubuntu use a 6-month release cycle, their version numbers
are formatted as (last two digits of year).(two digit month). This is
why it's always xx.04 and xx.10.

for this)

Probably requires a mode added (cvt listed the modes it will accept)
NOTE: virtual screen size determines whether it will be available -
might have to disable VGA (as it's not being used anyway).
I'll put it on my list of things to ponder.

I'm not sure - I suspect you may have fonts there - but they need
adding, ls will tell you.

They are... other possible locations include:-
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
/usr/local/share/fonts
/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType

I'll dig through that and try and decipher it during the week.
