Restarting
But it doesn't restart, I have to use Alt-SysRq-E, then log in again.
At this point the gpm functionality is gone -- no more mouse pointer
in the console. The last 12 lines of /var/log/Xorg.0.log are:

Not sure exactly when the trouble began, as I mostly use the
console & haven't tried to start X in months. Perhaps this is
related to X problems others have described in recent posts?
I'm running Debian unstable.
TIA for any suggestions,
John

What I write below assumes a standard Debian system (stock kernel and
intel driver packages); I have no idea if it is of any use for a
grml-derived installation.

I have the exact same card. The only combination that works for me at
the moment is using linux 2.6.30-1-686 with xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.8.1-1. If I upgrade either the kernel or video-intel to the
respective current version of Sid then I get a system that locks up
within 5-15 minutes. If I upgrade both these packages then I get an
instantaneous lock-up when X is started. From what I have seen on this
list, older kernels are also known to cause problems with Sid's current
Xorg driver.

The Intel driver is badly broken at the moment - it works with the
latest kernel only.
uname -a Linux squeeze 2.6.30-2-686 #1 SMP Sat Sep 26 01:16:22 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
I had to update to it to stop total lockups.
