Muito obrigado pela dica. Funcionou muito bem. Com o dpkg-reconfigure eu também não consegui modificar o mapa do teclado. Sem querer abusar (muito) da tua paciência, como coloco a instrução no script de start-up (como defino um script desse tipo?)

Usa o ficheiro ~/.Xsession, com "setxkbmap us intl &".

I stand corrected. Thank you. I'm afraid I can't tell the difference.
I did take Spanish in high school. But that was a long time ago, and
since I've had no occasion to use it since, I've forgotten most of what
I learned. I recognized a Spanish-looking word here and there and
thought it was Spanish.

Anyway, it doesn't belong here.
