I'm running Jessie with Mate as desktop GUI. I notice that Mate
terminal, which I use a lot, is very similar in function to
Gnome-terminal. But Mate terminal does not have the function of
repainting the text in a window when the window is resized. This is
available when I run gnome-terminal under Xfce4. How can I get that
feature in Mate? I already have Gnome-terminal installed and it
works when I boot into Xfce4, but I can't invoke it when I am
running Mate. Is this a feature, or a bug?

I like it a lot.
Best regards,

This potentially sounds like a bug: can you explain it a little
more (I have the feeling I didn't understand exactly what you
are describing)?

Thanks

It looks like Mate is hard-coded to use it's own terminal, at least
from the menus, but you should have no trouble launching gnome
-terminal, either from a shortcut or from an existing terminal. Do you
get any errors?

You might also try removing the mate terminal and setting gnome
-terminal as the default.

Anyway, I thought the mate terminal was just a fork of the gnome one,
so if it can't repaint it's probably a bug.

I am using Jessie in two PowerPC (G4 and QuadCore G5) machines with MATE
and I do not recall anything like that. Maybe a videocard issue?
Compositor??

My systems are:
- PowerPC G4 Laptop Powerbook @1.5Ghz with ATI Technologies Radeon 9700
Mobility

- PowerPC G5 QuadCore @2.5Ghz with NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB of
GDDR SDRAM, one single-link DVI port, and one dual-link DVI port

i used gnome-terminal some time ago while running Mate
and i don't recall there being any problem other than
having to set up a menu entry for it.

Mate terminal is a fork of GNOME 2's gnome-terminal; the gnome-terminal
package in Debian jessie is GNOME *3*'s gnome-terminal.

But yes, any failure-to-repaint sounds like a pretty clear-cut bug in
*something*, though it might not be in the expected place.

What is a shortcut in the context of Mate/Gnome?
No errors are reported to me the user.

I don't know how to remove mate terminal or how to set "gnome-terminal
as default". That is a rephrasing of my original question. ;-)

me too.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ well maybe there is
some F-key magic that I don't know about...

The repaint of text that I want is done by Bash and is already specified
in my $HOME/.bashrc AND it works correctly in an Xfce4 boot.

My current setup is:

Jessie, and both MATE and Xfce4 tasks are installed. I select one or
the other at boot-up. The real Gnome-terminal is installed and works
properly when I run Xfce4. But I don't actually know which version of
Gnome the terminal comes from. Aptitude points to Jessie with no
pinning or other fancy stuff.

I can get Gnome-terminal/Bash repaint if I open Gnome-terminal
inside the Mate-terminal window. But that is not a solution, that is data
collection for filing a bug report.

Thanks to all, and

So how do you launch gnome-terminal? What happens when you open mate
-terminal and type "gnome-terminal"?

I don't use MATE, but I'm sure there is documentation and hits on
Google for adding custom shortcuts to the menu, or keyboard shortcuts
if you prefer.

Well, uninstall the mate-terminal package, set up gnome-terminal as the
default x-terminal with the Debian alternatives system.

Some Googling suggests MATE will try to launch mate-terminal then
fallback to x-terminal-emulator (from alternatives).
