Debian 6 uninstallable?

To try to install Debian 6, I downloaded, as advised on the Debian web
site, the Debian 6 netinst iso file, wrote it to a CD, and tried to
install Debian 6, using it.
However, the computer on which I tried to install it, did not boot from
the CD.
I have previously installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, from a CD, on that
computer, without any problem.
Is the Debian 6 netinst iso, not installabe, or, not bootable?

I have successfully installed from the Squeeze netinst CD. Have you checked
your download/burn for errors?

Debian is probably the most installable distro there is, I install it on
all kinds of computers mac and pc.
Do you use the F10 or maybe the F12 key to choose the boot device? Did
you check the md5sum of the download or verify you have a good burn?
Maybe you have finger prints on the outside edge of the cd?
It's not a Live CD like Ubuntu and after doing the netinstall you will
also need to know what software you want/need to install, the netinstall
will give an internet connection and the base install only.

I just installed a pv-ops Dom0 2.6.32.27 Kernel on a 64 bit non VT machine.
Following instructions here

I did not do make install-stubdom.
It is a Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 amd64 bit version.

Now when I open virt-manager the option to install from Local ISO or
PXE are greyed out.
virt-manager version is 0.8.2

but after all this creation of a PV DomU (OS Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit) on a
64 bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a non VT 64 bit machine is failing.
Let me know if some one has any clue about it?

What was the datestring on in mate?
Which server did you pull it from?
Did you pull it down as an image? http, bittorrent, or jigdo?
Note: the au mirrors are currently updating, previously Sun Feb 6
02:34:05 2011 was the latest image
(http://ftp.iinet.net.au/debian/debian-cd/ which is the Oz cd mirror)
which I've installed without problem (expert acpi=force desktop=kde).

I installed on 4 machines using the previous netinst iso but install
line was just "expert acpi=force", desktop package selections came
later, those boxen required the "acpi=force" as they're fairly old, you
probably won't.
You don't say *which* netinst - I'm using "just" i386
You don't mention any error messages so I assume you didn't get any
(other than OS not found sort).
No problems using same image to upgrade a lenny boxen either. I've had
problems in the past with netinst iso cds on some drives - the tiny
image really tests the accuracy of the laser tracking, the same drives
that balks at booting a netinst will often have no problems with a dvd
image.
If the md5 sum checks out then that (sic) will be the cause of your
problem. (more error tolerance on outer track and disk spins slower)
I use a pxe server for my installs but that shouldn't affect whether a
burnt netinst iso boots for you or not.
Just now finished downloading freshly baked netsint iso, so latest
mirror updates are now complete.

I used the non-gui, full option, install (expert) with manual
partitioning - same version as the one you've quoted above.
While it's unlikely that acpi would 'cause your problem (I'm guessing) I
have had a case some years ago where Xandros would only install if acpi
was forced - in my, current, case I don't think it was needed for the
install - I'm just lazy and new that these boxen (three boxes, one
laptop) require it or shutdown results in a hang. I suspect that either
the gui option or auto-partitioning "might" be a cause.
Additionally I have seen similar errors to what you describe in your bug
report when installing Lenny onto old Toshibas last year - it puzzled me
for a while why an install from the cd should stop part way through due
to not being able to find the cd it was installing from... then it
dawned on me that I needed to force DMA off on the cd drive.
Your bug report does not say which install options you chose.... did you
try only the one dvd drive?
I note you tried a usb-key install which makes me guess it wasn't a
problem with the cd drive reading the inner tracks.
Unfortunately I no longer have that netinst image (replaced with last
nights one)- so I can't test it. I heard no complaints about the
machines built with that image though. I shall be building some
virtualbox appliances tomorrow with the latest netinst - I'll post here
if I have any problems.
Seems it wasn't that many years ago when I could never seem to find any
linux distro that "just" installed by hitting enter - I got so used to
having to try every install option that I could never bring myself to do
the default chicken install. Note: we call it chicken not because it's a
weak option - simply because we hoped we could glue bread to the enter
key and leave a chicken to earn our wages while we went to the pub.

Yes.

Yes. I figured the drive was OK because it worked for installing 5.0.8 and
testing.

I also just deleted my copies. I do still have the two CDs I made but don't
know how to regenerate the iso file from the CDs (unless a copy of the intact
iso file is on the CD; I forget).
It's been two weeks now, but as best I can recall I selected Auto-Partition
because I couldn't get Manual to work. (I usually use Manual.) Once Auto
was selected I could change whatever I wanted anyway.

Ensure that you:
1/ Properly wrote the ISO image in the CD
2/ Configured your BIOS boot sequence in the right manner
There are not many options for a failure here.

AMD64 system, they don't boot past the initial screen with "ISOLINUX
4.02 debian-20101014 EHDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvi et al"
and a flashing "_"
I tested with the AMD64 netinstall, the i386 netinstall and the dual
AMD64/i386 netinstall - all with the same result.
Initially I simply installed using debian-505-amd64-netinst.iso and upgraded.
Determined to get Squeeze installed directly, my second attempt
included using an external USB CDROM drive (which was successfully
used for my netbook's Squeeze installation) which also fails as
above.
Trying the debian-live ISO images had the same results as the
netinstalls, BUT using the debian-live-6.0.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.img
HD/USB image worked fine!
My 2 cents on the issue,

And this can be another different issue. At least you still get the
isolinux greeter banner.

Did you verified the checksum of the ISO image before burn it and also
the whole CD once it was written in the medium?

How about booting using a USB key?

MD5 sums of the ISOs are correct, I'm not going to MD5 the burned
images - takes a long time, and I don't believe this to be the issue.

Sorry, yes I did try a USB key - same results as ISOs. Only the IMG
file finally worked from USB key, the ISOs and/or hybrid-ISOs did not.

Further investigation confirmed that the Debian 6.0.0 ISO and my old computer are definitely not compatible:
1. With the very same CD, I had no difficulty installing Debian 6.0.0 in VirtualBox on my newer computer. This rules out a bad CD.
2. I tried booting up Debian 6.0.0 on USB on the old computer. Again, when I selected “Install” or “Graphical Install” on the installer boot menu, the screen froze up and then flickered. This also rules out a bad CD and a bad CD drive.
3. I had no difficulty installing Debian Lenny on the old computer. This rules out a bad CD drive.
I've installed Debian Lenny on the old computer, which I'm using as a firewall and server. I may be behind the times, but at least it works. I'll have to figure out how to upgrade to Squeeze, and I'll be using the PartImage program to clone my working Debian Lenny installation so that I can quickly restore it after any unsuccessful attempts to upgrade.

You might want to try (from memory, check exact parameters) "NOAPIC"
and/or "ACPI=OFF". I had to do this to install squeeze (when it was still
testing) on on older Toshiba laptop.

It looks like I'll be sticking with Debian Lenny. At least I have at least a year or two to resolve this Squeeze issue or figure out how to properly upgrade to Squeeze. I'm keeping those PartImage files of my Debian Lenny setups so that I can revert back to something that works.

Upgrading to Squeeze doesn't require release media at all. It requires
reading the release notes, which will walk you through updating your
source.list, doing an update/upgrade/dist-upgrade dance, and cleaning up
afterward.

What URL did you download, specifically?

That would be my first suspect,
GUI install and auto-partition the second
**local mirrors updating whilst you're building - the third**
and a drive that cannot properly read (or write) to the inner-track
would be the fourth place I'd look for the problem - though a failure to
be able to install from a USBkey should rule out the cd/dvd drive as the
problem.
I tried again this morning using the latest i386 netinst - this taking
copious notes and using VirtualBox and taking screen shots (just to
supplement my memory of course).
I have not tested the GUI install, nor am I likely too - I simply don't
have the time to test an install just for the purpose of testing an
install (that I'm not having problems with).
I usually install from PXE which would eliminate any inner-track cd
reading problems, but any boot-loader problems should still show up.
This time I just booted from a local image - I've previously had far too
many problems getting cd/dvds to read netinst or business card images
(strangely older drives have less problems than newer ones).
This mornings steps:
boot from (image) - choose Help from the first screen drops you to cli

Not necessary to md5sum the burnt cd - check cd is an option from the
install menu - takes maybe two minutes to do.

Mine (2 on this Tyan board) have been working as well for nearly 6 years now.
I've heard other stories about forcedeth not working well, but I've never even
had a hiccup from mine.

Nah - you're not behind the times - I still run Lenny on my main work
machines - though I've recently moved one server (headless) to Squeeze.
Early versions of both Etch and Lenny had problems with IBMs. At a
minimum you'll probably need "acpi=force" during the install, without
more information it's hard to know what else to suggest. vt4 will
normally give you the necessary clues - *vga mode* or dma for the cd
drive'd be other likely problems.
In your case it does "sound" like a vga mode problem.... if it helps I
used to boot a Knoppix (or an early DSL) on the problem machines to
determine the problem - Debian uses discover whereas Knoppix uses a
RedHat system to determine hardware. Most of the time Knoppix will run -
and checking dmesg will give some useful clues about workarounds.
Alternatively you could just try again with another video card (and BIOS
suitably configured). I'm guessing the Utility partition has been wiped...

Sorry - I should have been more explicit in my problem description,
from the responses.
The target computer for the installation, is a Dell Inspiron 580.
I initially tried to install Debian 5, using the install disk from which
I installed the Debian that I am currently using on this computer.
When I booted with that CD, it went rabid.
It went into an endless loop, scrolling text on the screen, at a
ridiculously fast rate, indefinitiely.
It disabled all interrupts, including the power switch, and the only way
that I could stop it, was to pull the power plug from the power socket.
Not good for the hardware, but no other option.
So, I used (via installation) a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS cd to re-partition the
HDD and install a version of Linux on the system.
The Debian 6 CD that I tried to install, has the file with the following
properties:
Name: debian-6.0.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso
Type: raw CD image
Size: 412.1 MB (432142336 bytes)
MIME Type: application/x-cd-image
Modified: Thu 24 Feb 2011 23:05:31 WST
Accessed: Thu 24 Feb 2011 23:14:52 WST

I assume that the times are the download time and the time that the file
was written to the CD.
The file was downloaded using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on another computer (not
this one), and the file was written to the CD, using brasero.
When I booted the target computer, with the CD in the optical drive, it
was bypassed in the boot process, which went directly to the HDD.
I had previously reconfigured the boot procedure to boot with the
removable optical drive first, then the HDD.
That was the boot order used for the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation
process, and that boot order is unchanged.
One thing - the Debian 5 Live CD (I think it was - it was one of the two
Debain 5 CD's; either the installable one or the Live one) indicated
that the CD/DVD drive was not recognised and it did not include a driver
for the drive.
If the Debian 6 CD did not recognise the CD/DVD drive, I expect that an
error message, indicating the incompatibility, would have been
displayed.
If the Debian 6 CD was not compatible, I expect that an error message
indicating this, would have been displayed.
But, the Debian 6 CD, simply did nothing, and the boot process bypassed
it.
In trying to find the source of the iso image again, I cannot find it.
It was via the debian.org web site
In going to the web page at http://www.debian.org/distrib/ , I find that
the netinst iso image has apparently, since my downloading the
delinquent image, been split so that the i386 and amd64 components are
separated onto separate images and separate downloads and separate
installations (which is unfortunate, as I had imagined that the image
that I had downloaded would detect the hardware, and recommend which is
the appropriate installation - amd64 or i386 (previously discussed in
another query that I had raised) - however, whether or not my perception
of the autodetection and recommendation applicable to the hardware, was
correct, the provision of the image appears to have changed).
So, it appears that I have to start again, and I assume that the iso
image that I had downloaded for Debian 6, had been found to be too
buggy, and so had been chucked out by Debian, and the replacements
completely different, having been split into amd64 and i386 components.

Fortunately there's an exception to many bad rules :-)
Don't know if I've had any Tyan boards through - the two forcedeths I
have on hand are both ASUS - and it's only GNU/Linux drivers that have a
problem with them - no biggy, NICs are cheap.

Hmmm. *maybe* this is a feature of the hybrid ISO format and your
BIOS. If it's not too much trouble, please could you try an
appropriate image from

And the internet connection is working without a problem from within the
installer? Try using a console (Ctrl+)Alt+F1 and 'ping google.com'
should tell you if everything is ok.
Possible problem: some network cards (especially wireless) need non-free
firmware, which is not included in the official images.

For small images (netiso) I do not tend to verify the checksum or the
media, but for bigger files (CD or DVD sets) I do, just to discard any
problem with the burning proccess. Anyway, if the CD presents any problem
(does not boot or gets stuck at Isolinux banner) it's a good idea to
perform the test.

That sounds indeed very weird. One mirror can have problems but not all
of them. I'd suspect from your Internet connection at the time of the
installation.
Did you manually specify the mirror's URI or just select one from the
drop-down menu?

Bret, I sent you (offlist) a tested, working link to the local (Oz) CD
mirror. If you cut and pasted the wget line you will find that it still
works. That image is the amd64-i386 image baked the other day.

Went to console, tried to ping; error returned "ping not found".
So far, 3 CD's, ~800MB of downloads, still unable to install Debian 6.
It sounds very much like the Monty Python "dead parrot sketch".
In setting up (manually) the nertwork settings, it automatically found
the gateway IP address, so I assume that the NIC is operational with the
installation process so far.
It will now have to wait until I have found how to check our download
quota usage, before I try to download the next suggested iso image of
400MB to initiate yet another installation attempt.
It appears that I should have ignored the instructions, and just
downloaded the DVD image from the web page at
http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ , as it would probably work out being
less in downloads, if the DVD iso image works.

Remember that you can always fall into a tty to get the error messages
(IIRC, debug messages go to tty4). When you get an error ("mirror x nor
found", "command not found", "card not detected", etc...), jump to tty4
and review the logs.

You can install from the first CD (no Internet connection required).
Install a basic system and once you're in, you can start downloading the
rest of the packages.

I've never had problems with the netiso image, but sure, sometimes is
better to get the first CD or DVD and move on.

And since the checksum is going to end up very different even for a lost
bit or so.. you can tell at glance whether it's right or not.

I usually run md5sum a second time against the medium after burning and
it only takes a few seconds:
# mount /dev/sdc /media
# cd /media
# md5sum -c md5sum.txt
But then, the only good it ever did me was to reveal some kind of bug
with md5sum.txt and the install CD not being in sync'.. :-)
Just did one with Linux Mint 10 Ubuntu version.. and I've wasted about
an hour trying to figure out why I have files listed in md5sum.txt that
do not even exist..!
I guess I should've downloaded the debian-based version instead..

I've just encountered a similar problem to Bret (and other posters).
With other installs I've had no problems.
Attempting to install the debian-6.0.0-i386-netinst.iso dated Sat Mar 12
04:57:36 2011 burnt CD from two different, known working, USB DVD drives
failed.
MD5 sums checked ok, machines are ASUS PC Eeee 701SDs.
Attempting to install from a USBkey also failed. Same USBkey boots fine
on other machines.
Symptoms:- nothing, if install source is made the only device in the
BIOS boot list - nothing happens.

I used the non-hybrid:-

Made the USBkey bootable with:-

This time the installs worked perfectly (thanks Steve).
Note: I didn't try burning the non-hybrid image to CD.
