debian-31r3-powerpc-netinst.iso install on a wallstreet:
old world, sonnet G3 500, 318 meg ram, cdrom, floppy
Turned off journaling on my osx volume and checked and it is says no
under journaling
I have 2 mac partitions:
/dev/hda9 osx hfs+
/dev/hda10 os9 hfs+
tried to mount with:
debian:~# mount -t hfsplus /dev/hda10 /mnt/os9
mount: unknown filesystem type 'hfsplus'
debian:~# hmount /dev/hda10 /mnt/os9
Volume name is "BootX" (locked)
Volume was created on Mon Sep 18 19:10:46 2006
Volume as last modified on Mon Oct 30 09:24/05 2006
Volume has 0 bytes free
Nobody seems to be able to help me get the eth0 working so I am going
to nuke debian install and start again.
But I would like to get a few files off before I do so I need to
mount either my os9, osX, or floppy or usb memory stick....
all of which have been unsuccessful...
Thanks in advance,
Barry

During the install if you <go back> during the install, you get the
dropped into a menu from which you can select to load the hfs modules
which should let you mount the mac partition.
I can't remember which option exactly but it's something like 'load
installer components'.

hfs plus is mounted via -t ufs, there is no
such thing as -t hpfsplus !!!!
("man mount" for whole story)

Sorry brian, I don't bother what the man mount does say, as I use
hfsplus for some years now on at least 3 debian installations and two
Ubuntu. hfsplus is alive!
One thing you might to is apt-get install hfsplus as it is a package
within otherfs. And debian is well known not always getting the whole
thing done. On the other side, hfsplus is part of the ppc kernel 2.4
and 2.6.
There is such a thing as -t hfsplus.

as describe in man page for mount. if you can't
trust this, you surely are not using /usr/share/doc,
where most things have not been updated since woody ?
where do you get your information when things change,
then, do you read the source code ?
the package hfsplus, does not mount actually its
a virtual thing.
but the real hangup in both cases is its read only.
so for the original poster of this thread, no help
really.
to copy things back from linux to mac os you need
an plain hfs partion, you can use mount -t hfs for
that or you can use the hfs package.
none of this has changed for me in the last year from
2.6.8 through 2.6.18 kernel.
ok, there are modules for all those kernel versions,
(which means what -- that the util packages use them,
probably, not necesarily the mount utility ...)
but in the absence of documentation or
in the presence of obsolete misleading documentation,
what ?
i don't have psychic powers, i can't cook up
procedures
out of my imagination.

We have the perfect Group for you. Check out the handy changes to Yahoo! Groups

I just want to confirm that one can mount hfsplus partitions used by
MacOSX on linux in read-write mode. However, you should make sure
that you disable the journal on the partition, because the journal is
not supported on linux. Note also that there is currently no support
to check the filesystem on linux.
On my system:
ruben@guava ~ $ grep hfsplus /etc/fstab
/dev/hda7 /mnt/mac hfsplus ro 0 0
/dev/hda8 /mnt/osx hfsplus ro,noauto 0 0
ruben@guava ~ $ mount | grep hfsplus
/dev/hda7 on /mnt/mac type hfsplus (ro)
Yup, it is mounted read-only, because I only need to use that
partition read-only. If it is mounted read-write and for some reason
the partition is not umounted cleanly, I will have to reboot in OSX to
have the partition checked... so that's why I just mount it read-only,
but I used to mount it read-write before and writing did work.

hmmm...?
ruben@guava ~ $ dpkg -L hfsplus

Hmm.. and now I see there is a hpfsck... well, I read long time ago
that someone was trying to port it from the open source OSX
parts.. must have been ported in the mean time then.

I've been using that HFS+ partition already for a long
time... probably about a year. And it's just with regular kernel
support and the hfsplus package. (on Debian unstable)
ruben@guava ~ $ grep HFS /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_HFS_FS=y
CONFIG_HFSPLUS_FS=y
Anyways.. can't help with the problem of the original poster.. like
someone else said.. it seems likely that the appropriate kernel module
is missing and/or the hfsplus package.
Ruben
This is what you would use to mount a UFS partition as created by osx.
It definitely would not work on an HFS+ filesystem.

My G5 running sarge has the hfsplus.ko module.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 88490 Nov 23 2005 /lib/modules/2.6.8-power4-smp/kernel/fs/hfsplus/hfsplus.ko
This is the default kernel I've been using for ages.

I agree that the kernel that the original poster was using was likely
misconfigured in some way to not have the hfsplus code. It's been
available in Debian kernels for a long time.

Me too but what we have not is a tool do check/repair hfs+ partitions
when they were unmounted uncorrectly.
Personally I use mol for this.
