instead I get a scratchy terrible sound that sounds like someone blowing air under their tongue while scratching their fingernails on glass, whenever I try to listen to a ogg or mp3 lecture or music.
When I downloaded a ubuntu live disk 10.04 sound works fine. So it is not a hardware problem.
I had the problem for some before squeeze time and was running squeeze with this problem too. I tried some random things i googled - such as putting snd-powermac in the /etc/modules directory as well as putting
the following modules to be blacklisted:
snd-aoa
snd-aoa-codec-tas
snd-aoa-fabric-layout
snd-aoa-i2sbus
snd-aoa-soundbus
-
this had no effect. still the same bad sound.
I upgraded to the latest sid kernel 2.6.38-2
from the squeeze kernel and
no help. I also tried installing the latest alsa-driver from the alsa web site and this did not help?
Is there anything that I can do to get this very portable nice laptop sound working? It worked fine for the longest time...

I have an almost identical machine: 1.07 Ghz model iBook G4 (early
2004). So I did two simple tests:
First I changed input to Mic in alsamixer, then recoded some sound:
arecord -f cd t.wav
and played it back:
aplay t.wav
Second I played this file:
http://ristosu.wippiespace.com/pub/tecbeat.au
with:
cat tecbeat.au > /dev/audio
Both tests worked well. Can you try these, too?

A good way of debugging would be to list the snd modules Ubuntu
distro is using. I guess snd-aoa-codec-tas should be correct for
your machine. Could you please send the output of
$ lsmod | grep snd
from your Ubuntu distro?

Don't put any snd module in /etc/modules and let udev do the job.

Don't do that.

Do what I've mentioned above, reboot and post the following outputs
as user:
$ lsmod | grep snd
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
$ cat /proc/asound/version
$ dpkg -l | egrep "(alsa-|asound)"
$ aplay -lL
$ groups

This is contradictory. A mix of snd-poermac and snd-aoa. Try
# rmmod snd-powerma
# modprobe -v snd-aoa
# modprobe snd-aoa-codec-tas

snd_powermac is used for AWACS, DACA, Burgundi, Tumbler, Keywest. Do
you have instructions to load snd-powermac in /etc/modules or
/etc/modprobe.d?
A look into the alsa sources gives me:
snd-powermac is used to run on:
AWACS, DACA, Burgundy, Tumbler, Keywest
snd_aoa_codec_onyx is used to run on:
latest (last) generation of Apple PPC
snd_aoa_codec_tas is uded to run on:
iBooks and PowerBooks without digital
snd_aoa_codec_toonie is used to run on:
Mac Mini

Uuups. This doesn't look like a Debian version. AFAIK 2.6.38
provides 1.0.23? Did you compiled the drivers by youself?

So recently, after installing the latest kernel from sid and seeing no benefit, I thought based upon web posting of other people that the problem was the older released alsa drivers. So I went directly to the alsa web site and installed the latest alsa-drivers. It has had no effect. same sound output on the installed debian. Thus I don't think that we can attribute the problem to the new alsa drivers which are newer than the sid alsa version.
I did what you said to do. rmmod the snd-powermac and did the install of the kernel you asked for. Now I get the following:
snd_aoa_codec_tas 13459 0
snd_aoa 15648 1 snd_aoa_codec_tas

Is libao installed?
$ dpkg -l |grep libao
Is oss-compat installed?
$ dpkg -l |grep oss-compat
Can you hear sound by playing a mp3 via mplayer or others?

no i cannot.
in fact even
cat techsound.au > /dev/audio
gives no sound.
before it gave the scratchy sound.
now when i did modprobe snd-powermac to see if i can hear the scratchy sound again, the machine froze, preventing me from saving the output of the lists of packages installed.
rest assured the standard packages are installed for squeeze. this is a kernel problem not a problem with not having userland packages installed for particular audio codecs :)

Looks like snd-aoa is not even trying to support this machine, snd-powermac is.
And Ubuntu 10.04 uses the same version of kernel, 2.6.32. But it is
running pulseaudio on top on snd-powermac.
Is it possible that the problem is caused by some old volume control
data? Is it a fresh install?
Have you tried to adjust the controls in alsamixer? Take off
everything else, and add just some Master volume and PCM.

it is not a powermac.
its not a volume issue. i hear fine just strange sounds. alsamixer set to 99 or lower for master and stuff for pcm . why would treble and bass have any effect?
in a week when i get back from a conference if neccessary I will trash the install and reinstall and try again.
(i have never had to reinstall debian every before on 10's of machines!!!) this is a very sad occurence!!! i have never had this idea of reinstalling - so windows like. :(

Maybe you are over-reacting. If we can find out what makes the
difference between your and my installation...
To run exactly the same driver:
1) install stock kernel for squeeze: linux-image-2.6.32-5-powerpc (2.6.32-31)
2) install my driver package:
http://ristosu.wippiespace.com/pub/alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-powerpc_1.0.23+dfsg-2+2.6.32-31_powerpc.deb
To 'refresh' your alsa driver, you could try to remove (or rename)
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

but recall that the behavior pre-existed the alsa drivers installed
via download make and make install.
i was hoping that my problems corresponded to problems others reported with the alsa drivers on ppc so that installing the latest drivers, done on tuesday or wednesday last, was supposed to fix, but did not change the sysystem behavior at all... same weird sound no music :(

As soon as I got home, I did got rid of the file,
I then ran mpg321 file.mp3 and no change.
Then i rebooted again and then tried again
and still same problem :(
I wish this problem would just fix itself with apt-get :)
Mitchell
By the way, thank you again for all of your attention!
I hope we lick this problem, I dont want to have to reinstall!
Thanks!

My guess is that this is some kind of byte order problem, low and high
bytes of the 16 bit sample get swapped. Either the chip gets out of
sync, or the code interprets the data wrong.
After having the problem with several kernels, one has to believe that
the problem lies in the user level programs.
Maybe ALSA has some .asoundrc file in your home directory. Try to
remove it, as well.
Maybe you should try to describe your problem to the real ALSA experts
at their mailing list alsa...@lists.sourceforge.net.

I created a new user and then i added him to the audio group and then ran all from the new home directory and still have the same result.
