Hello debian-arm community,

I try to install Brother MFC 7820N as a network scanner on a QNAP
TS-109 device using Linux kernel 2.6.26-2-orion5x. Two driver packages
are provided by Brother Industries (brscan2-0.2.5-1.i386.deb and
brscan2-0.2.5-1.amd64.deb), but unfortunately none for the armel
architecture. The driver sources (brscan2-src-0.2.5-1.tar.gz) are
provided by Brother Industries (see
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/sane_drivers.html)
as well.

I have tried to compile the sources using g++ 4.3.2 on the NAS. It
shows that subdirectory "brscan" causes a lot of compiler errors, but
"brscan64" just a few.

My question is what do i need to do? Try to fix the "brscan" or
"brscan64" sources? A install script is provided with the sources, but
I am wondering if it would be more useful to create a debian package.
All installation instructions by Brother Industries are based on dpkg
packages.

Hints and recommendations are very much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Carl

I suspect you'll find those aren't actually full sources. IIRC it's a wrapper
around a binary only library. i.e. you're you've been screwed over by the
manufacturer.

Thank you. I have looked into the source package closer now. There are a
lot of C sources provided, but indeed some directories only have
header files and shared object libraries. I didn't notice that at the
beginning. Does that mean I have no chance to use the scanner driver
on armel devices?

Please excuse me, I have pointed you to an out of date website in my
previous email. Here is the direct link to the currently valid
location of the sources. Search for "brscan2 driver" on this side:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_src.html

Kind regards,
Carl

You could give a try to http://usbip.sourceforge.net/
it looks quite suboptimal though...

Cheers,

Luca

Binary objects for i386 won't work on ARM, there's no chance of getting the
Brother drivers working directly, however, there maybe an free software
replacement that can be used in its place (I've never looked, so I can't say
for certain).

Hate to be the bearer of bad news :-/
