When Debian 4.0 (etch) got updated a few days ago for its first point
release (4.0r1), the kernel images got updated on all architectures.
Unfortunately, the package that points to the latest kernel image did
not get updated on ARM, which means that the installer tries to
install the old kernel image (which is no longer available) and fails.
This will be fixed in the next point release (4.0r2). There is no
plan yet as to when this will happen but hopefully soon because there
was another problem with r1 that needs to be addressed.
Note that this problem does not affect existing users of Debian on
ARM, but only new installations. I will write another note when 4.0r2
is out and new installations are possible again.
Apologies for this inconvenience.

Hi Martin!
Is there any word yet on when this will be fixed?
Thanks!
Rick
I want to let you know that in my opinion it is still possible to
install Debian 4.0 on NSLU2 using the "normal" installation method.
I used the "unofficial image" (with the driver for the internal network
interface included) to do the installation.
However after connecting to the installer via SSH do the following:
- start the menu
- choose "<Go Back>"
- choose "Change debconf priority" and set the priority to "low"
- resume installation with "Choose a mirror of the Debian archive"
Till then you have to answer more details, but the benefit was you'll be
asked which kernel you want to use:
- choose "linux-image-2.6.18-5-ixp4xx" and the further installation
should work as expected
I did this workaround serveral times and till now I noticed no further
problem.
I hope this will help to make the installation easier till the real
issue is fixed.
Best regards,
Rainer
Yes, that works. An alternative is to use the "expert" mode of the
installation; the effect is exactly the same (expert mode is defined as
"run the installation at low priority")
However, expert mode isn't as easy to install as the "regular" mode.

Q: How does one invoke the "expert" mode in the "unofficial image"
for the NSLU2 installer? Essentially, Rainer's instructions invoke
"expert mode" the hard way, but if there's an easy way to get into
expert mode right from the start, I'd like to know about it.
Enjoy!
Rick
I heard 4.0r2 is scheduled for the second half of September.

Upslug2 is a linux tool for flashing images onto an NSLU2. It does not
have a windows port as far as I know.
There is a SerComm upgrade tool which does much the same thing and works
on Windows.
Stay well away from the Linksys EraseAll tool - if you use it with a
Debian image it will permanently brick your slug (unless you have JTAG
to recover it). This is because the Debian NSLU2 images do not contain
RedBoot. All other flashing techniques (including Upslug2 and the
SerComm tool) are careful not to touch your bootloader.
I would suggest you get a Debian LiveCD, and use it on that windowsXP
computer to run Debian so you can use Upslug2 to flash the NSLU2.

Is there a step by step guide to installing Debian. I am new to linux
although i successfully flashed Slug to Unslung and Openslug. But i want to
do the debian one right!
I tried using the sercomm utility and reflashed to Debian but it does not
boot up I get 3 beeps and the top light stays orange.
Am i using the flash file which doesnt work? Where do i find the correct
one.
If i go with Debian live and Upslug(Is that better?) which Debian live Image
do i use on P4 PC.
Thanks Again

I talked to the stable release manager yesterday and he told me that
4.0r2 is planned for the first or second week of October.
Is it still broken?
Doesn't even the Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r0 on
http://www.slug-firmware.net/d-dls.php work?

Daniel Ascher - www.chlog.net
Yes. 4.0r2 is scheduled for the first or second week of October.

No, because the mirorrs no longer carry 4.0r0 but 4.0r1 and that
doesn't work. You need to wait for 4.0r2.

No - it is a property of Debian/NSLU2 installations that they depend
upon a sane Debian repository, and there seems to be something at the
repository side which has changed such that the installer image does not
result in a successful automatic installation.
The maintainers of slug-firmware.net have no control over this.
Note that there have been a couple of messages on this list detailing
how to work-around this problem by entering expert mode and doing stuff.

After some time i got it to work although it had dhcp and i am sure i had
static ip set(but could be wrong)
But now it has stopped working, it seems to boot up I get a flashing
green/orange light and the dhcp client list on router adds an ip address
when it boots up which i can ping. But i cannot connect using Putty.
I added a second drive which mounted fine but it seemed to be when i
rebooted it hasnt worked since.
Any Ideas
Thanks

Read the section "The slug fails to reboot with 2 drives connected" at
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Debian/TroubleShooting It will tell
you what to do.

This is the installer. This is broken at the moment.

When you use this method, you need to use the following firmware:
http://cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/files/sda1-2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch2

Linksys say to me that with this firmware they cannot support me.
Do you know how can I upload the right firmware to the system ?
Thanks for your help,
Fabio.

You didn't really answer whether you're using the firmware from
http://www.slug-firmware.net/d-dls.php or from
http://cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/files/sda1-2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch2
In any case, the installer will work again soon. So I suggest you use
the original Linksys firmware for now, and try to install Debian when
the installer is working again (in a few weeks).
