Hi all,

I'm using KDE 5 on stretch. Just noticed that kmix (audio mixer) and bluedevil
(bluetooth) icons are no longer there in the system tray. Till yesterday I had
both.

I've found no way to restore them. I tried to remove the system tray widget
from the panel, and added a new one (after some woes, it wasn't so
straightforward to add it to the panel). But the new widget displays the same
icons of the old, so no kmix nor bluedevil.

Then I went to the system tray settings, but I don't have the entries I'm
after, so I cannot activate them. They are not listed in the "extra items"
section in the "general" tab, nor in the "entries" tab.

Any idea? The only reason for the existance of kmix is to sit in the tray!

Forgot to mention that another test I did was creating a new user and launch a
kde session with that user. The system tray does not have those two icons for
that user either.

For Kmix, you might want to replace it by "plasma-pa".
For "bluedevil" I do have 4:5.8.4-1.
In any case I have a "testing" from yesterday or the day before, and it shows
both "volume" and "bluetooth" icons in the system tray.
Is bluetooth enabled in Settings? Because if it's not, the icon might not
show.
Sorry not being able to help more.

Sorry, I was unaccurate in my previous description. The sound icon I had in
the system tray till a couple of days ago was not kmix (which I don't have
intalled), but it was the Audio Volume control of the System Settings Module.

A week ago or so I also installed plasma-pa (v. 4:5.8.4-1), but it didn't show
up in the tray--I just had the audio volume icon there, and that was fine.

So do I.

Until a couple of days ago I did have both as well. I don't know what happened
since then. The last package update on my system was on 20 january, several
days before the issue occurred, so it has to be something different.

Yes, it is enabled, and it does work BWT.

I'm sending an extract of my .config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.
It shows that the panel containment has ID=2. The panel has a system tray
applet, whose containment id is 21.

The system tray in turn has several applets in it. The interesting part is the
general section. For ID=21 neither org.kde.plasma.volume nor
org.kde.plasma.bluetooth is listed. Funnily enough I have an analogous general
section with a different ID (ID=7), that lists both such items. The point
there is no containment with ID=5. BTW there are other two general sections
(for containment IDs 33 and 25), which are the exact copy of the section for
ID=21 (the system tray), and aren't linked to any actual containment either.

Here's the relevant part of that rc file:

Hi solitone,

I have seen this in recent days on Debian testing. It was caused by updating
my system part way through the very recent large KDE update. In other words,
some packages were at the old version and some at the new. It took a few days
for all the necessary package updates to flow though into testing. As of
yesterday (23rd January), an up to date Debian testing does not exhibit this
any more ... for me.

Andy.

Yes, that would be the only possible explanation. Although my last update was
on 20th January, and since then I rebooted my system several times, but I
noticed the issue only yesterday (23rd January). So I didn't relate the issue
with that update, but perhaps I simply didn't notice it?

Few hours ago I got a notification showing I've got 293 packages upgradable
(wow!), many of which are related to KDE. For instance, just to mention three
KDE packages, it proposes to upgrade kde5 from 5.27.0-1 to 5.28.0-1, and
plasma-desktop and plasma-widgets-addons from 4:5.8.2-1 to 4:5.8.4-1. What
versions do you have of these packages? I'm a bit worried and I haven't yet
confirmed this huge update!

Cheers,
Davide

You probably did not notice it or you did some partial updates on the way.

Yes, pieces of both Frameworks and Plasma ("kde5" does not map any existing
artifact, so please don't use it) landed asynchronously in the last day (the
last ones two days ago). The libraries part of Frameworks should be upgraded
together, and probably most pieces part of Plasma should be upgraded together.

Now testing has Frameworks 5.28, and mostly Plasma 5.8.4.

After an update on the 21st I saw the problem - part way through all the
relevant packages needed.

Go for the full update. Much better to have a working system than one which
may be broken in more ways than you have found so far. In my experience you
will come out of it smiling :-) The Debian KDE team do an awesome job.

I confirm that after today's big KDE update, missing icons are again displayed
in the tray. Nice! :-)

Forgot to mention that now my plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc file
shows that containment 21 (i.e. my system tray widget) has
org.kde.plasma.bluetooth and org.kde.plasma.volume--such entries were
automatically added:

What about containments 25, 33, and 7? They are not linked to anything.
Possibly it is garbage that was not cleared up after I added and then removed
some system tray widgets for testing. They do not cause any issue whatsoever,
but do you think it would be better to manually remove those sections?

That's right, there is no such package. Don't know what I saw yesterday in the
upgradable list, I thought I had seen that package, but in fact it doesn't
exist!
