Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

During boot, the 4.12 kernel suggests some additional kernel options
should be enabled to improve touchpad support:

Sep 8 14:18:15 muta kernel: [ 4.089833] psmouse serio1: synaptics:
queried max coordinates: x [..5712], y [..4780]
Sep 8 14:18:15 muta kernel: [ 4.121930] psmouse serio1: synaptics:
queried min coordinates: x [1232..], y [1074..]
Sep 8 14:18:15 muta kernel: [ 4.121939] psmouse serio1: synaptics:
The touchpad can support a better bus than the too old PS/2 protocol.
Make sure MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS and RMI4_SMB are enabled to get a
better touchpad experience.
Sep 8 14:18:15 muta kernel: [ 4.184718] psmouse serio1: synaptics:
Touchpad model: 1, fw: 8.2, id: 0x1e2b1, caps:
0xf407a3/0x943300/0x12e800/0x410000, board id: 3075, fw id: 2477413
Sep 8 14:18:15 muta kernel: [ 4.184735] psmouse serio1: synaptics:
serio: Synaptics pass-through port at isa0060/serio1/input0

Please consider enabling CONFIG_RMI4_SMB.
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS is already enabled:

bootc@muta ~ $ egrep 'MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS|RMI4_SMB'
/boot/config-4.12.0-1-amd64
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS=y
# CONFIG_RMI4_SMB is not set

Thanks,
Chris

Hi folks,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X270 and noticed that my kernel (Debian
buster/testing stock kernel) was suggesting that my Touchpad would
benefit from having CONFIG_RMI4_SMB enabled, so I raised this Debian bug:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=875621

This was closed today with an updated Debian kernel upload,
linux_4.13.10-1 (thanks Ben). The new kernel now says:

So I enabled psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1 on my kernel command line
and voila, rmi4_smbus is used and my Touchpad is apparently much better
off for it. Great! Except I can't use my TrackPoint now, it no longer
shows up at all:

So I'm emailing both about having to enable synaptics_intertouch for my
Touchpad as instructed in dmesg, and also that enabling it makes my
TrackPoint disappear.

I had the same issue on X1 Carbon (5th gen)

you need to load the » rmi_smbus « module before loading psmouse

I didn't really have any latency issues on my X270 at all, I just
noticed the dmesg output because I routinely check dmesg when I upgrade
the kernel - I'm a bit sad like that. So I raised #875621 to have the
options enabled.

In fact with CONFIG_RMI4_SMB enabled and psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1
(needed because my TouchPad isn't in the whitelist) I ran into issues
where my TrackPoint stopped working. I mailed
linux...@vger.kernel.org[1] and all I got was someone suggesting
loading the modules in a specific order to restore functionality. I
ended up just disabling psmouse.synaptics_intertouch again.

1. https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg53749.html

Then #880471 comes along where enabling CONFIG_RMI4_SMB breaks the
TouchPad on the ThinkPad X11e. I noticed that bug and commented that
because nothing improved for me, the new config may as well just be
disabled to avoid further regressions.

Not sure what to suggest here unless someone who is actually involved in
maintaining this stuff (and who knows how it works) steps up to help.

HTH,
Chris

I didn't try it. I didn't feel like I was missing out by giving up and
just disabling it.

As a user, I shouldn't have to care and the kernel should do the right
thing for me.

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
linux, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.

Dear maintainer,

With every new kernel release I hope these simple instructions from the dmesg are followed:

psmouse serio2: synaptics: The touchpad can support a better bus than the too old PS/2 protocol. Make sure MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS and RMI4_SMB are enabled to get a better touchpad experience.

But every time I check I see:

% grep -i rmi4_smb /boot/config-4.18.0-1-amd64

# CONFIG_RMI4_SMB is not set

Why is it so hard to enable this kernel option?!

We did it once before and it caused a regression (bug #880471). So,
before we enable it again someone will need to investigate and check
that the regression won't happen again.

As an additional data point, in case it's of any help, I can add that I
also have problems due to CONFIG_RMI4_SMB being disabled. I'm using a
Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th generation machine.

I have rebuilt my kernel with CONFIG_RMI4_SMB enabled and everything is
fine.

If there are still machines that have issues with this option enabled,
isn't there a way to enable CONFIG_RMI4_SMB in the kernel and use module
blacklisting wherever that module causes problems?

This would seem to be a reasonable way to make things work for everyone
without anyone having to recompile kernels or kernel modules.

Hi,

Without this kernel module shipped, users of X1 gen6 are forced to compile,
which is significantly more taxing than just having to unblacklist the
module.

Can't it be shipped, yet added to the default blacklist, until the Yoga X11e
issue is resolved?

(It goes without saying that it's already most annoying to have to fiddle
with anything at all to get basic mouse support on this machine, it's like
it's 1998 all over again and I'm too old for this...)

TIA.

I can confirm that recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_RMI4_SMB=m (and only that change) is sufficient to make the Touchpad & TrackPoint usable on the X1 Carbon 6th gen. Without this, it's completely unusable.

This is a regression -- a Debian 9.6 (stretch) live CD does not have this problem with this hardware.

Thanks

I have a Thinkpad T550 and initially had a similar issue:

With the stock kernel in Sid:

dmesg |grep psmouse

psmouse serio1: synaptics: The touchpad can support a better bus than
the too old PS/2 protocol. Make sure MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS and
RMI4_SMB are enabled to get a better touchpad experience.

I built a new kernel 'the Debian way' and now everything looks good:

egrep 'MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS|RMI4_SMB' /boot/config-4.19.16
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS_SMBUS=y

That said, I don't really notice any different behavior with the
touchpad :-)

The touchpad and the trackpoint still work but I haven't figured out how
to enable edge scrolling, circular scrolling, nor to set features like
sensitivity.

Someone above stated that he installed xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.
That package has been depcrecated by xserver-xorg-input-libinput:

apt-cache show xserver-xorg-input-libinput
...
This package provides the driver for input devices using libinput library.
It can handle keyboards, mice and touchpads, and essentially replaces the
 separate -evdev and -synaptics drivers.

In contrast to what I wrote earlier it appears that
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics *does* need to be installed.  I installed
it and now xinput list-props is listing more features such as circular
scrolling.  In Plasma system settings touchpad features that were
previously not available are now available.
