Hi,

As mentioned in follow-ups (by Diederik and me), that module only appeared
in v6.2-rc1 (v6.2-rc1~99^2~345^2~3), so no it's not available in Bookworm.

Reassigning to the kernel accordingly, so that it gets enabled in some
future upload.

I am suspecting sometime after Bookworm is released in June. Certainly
bookworm is using 6.1 kernel (which is a longterm support kernel, which
6.2 isn't). So the kernel version isn't changing until the next release
(typically in 2 years or so if the past is anything to go by). Testing
and unstable will of course get a new kernel much sooner than that.

I would be surprised if support for a new network chip version was
backported to the 6.1 stable tree. Usually only bug fixes get ported
there.

today I tried again with a TP-Link TL-WN725N Nano USB dongle which
contains the Realtek RTL8188EU chip set. Same result, the adapter is not
recognized and I am presented with a list of kernel modules of which
none works. But in this case, I am pretty sure that the RTL8188EU chip
*should* be supported by a recent kernel.

Any hints, or should I file a separate installation report?

Cheers,

- Fabian

Separate installation report as it appears to be an entirely different problem.

Hi Fabian,
RTL8188EU support requires Linux 6.3+:

While that appears to be a 'proper' driver for RTL8188EU, it looks like there
was a previous driver for it in staging:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/log/?h=linux-6.1.y&qt=grep&q=RTL8188EU

The new installation report (https://bugs.debian.org/1035824) has this line:
[42871.936975] r8188eu: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

Am I missing something (still)?

I'm not in the habit of calling people stupid ;-)
I'm actually glad you pointed out the new driver as I have a (vague) memory
that the 8188EU driver has always been (a bit) problematic and knowing there
is now a 'proper' driver for it, is welcome news :-)
