Please unblock package gnome-menus for an additional fix for #692141.
The sole change to the script would indeed fix new installations but not
existing ones.

gnome-menus (3.4.2-7) unstable; urgency=low

* gnome-menus.postinst: clean up the desktop files once upon upgrades,
in order to get rid of files generated by a buggy script.

Sorry you've been waiting. On the basis that Julien downgraded #696530 to
normal this isn't strictly RC; conversely, menu-xdg has considerable
popcon.

As I understand it the problem shows up when update-menus is run as a user.
Bill, is that an unusual thing to do or would you expect it from many
users?

Joss, do you have particularly strong feelings about getting this into
Wheezy or can it wait for Jessie?

Thanks,

Yeah, it's important to get this fix into wheezy as without it, the
Shell overview mode, which is an integral part of GNOME Shell, is messed
up with duplicate entries (which come from menu-xdg).

So, please, consider unblocking it.

I would says this is rather unusual for GNOME users.
I will close #696530 anyway. The level of animosity displayed in this report
makes it the only option.

There is a delta of two versions between wheezy and sid, for two
unrelated issues:
* 3.4.2-6 is about blacklisting menu entries generated by
update-menus run as user. We received several bug reports
complaining about that, so this is a real bug met by users.
* 3.4.2-7 fixes an unrelated issue, namely an upgrade path that
generates broken desktop entries.

If you think only one of the two changes is OK for wheezy, I can prepare
a t-p-u package. But so far, I am confident it would be better to have
them in wheezy.

As for menu-xdg’s popcon, it should go down since we removed the
remaining dependencies in the default installation.

Cheers,

I like to add that if they do not like the result of running update-menus, they
can revert it by running update-menus --remove, or they can configure menu not
to use menu-xdg by doing mkdir ~/.menu-methods

Control: tag -1 - moreinfo

Hi,

Jonathan Wiltshire wrote (19 Feb 2013 20:01:45 GMT) :
> Do you have any comment on Bill's reply?

Assuming Jonathan's question was specifically about Bill stating that
it was "rather unusual for GNOME users" to run update-menus as user,
then I believe it was answered by Josselin soon after Jonathan asked:

Josselin Mouette wrote (19 Feb 2013 20:14:39 GMT) :

I'm therefore removing the moreinfo tag. If I missed another request
for information from the release team, then I'm sorry... in which
case, feel free to re-add the tag and clarify the question :)

The summary posted by Josselin will probably be helpful to make
a decision: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=697589#44
