Package: chromium
Version: 67.0.3396.62-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

* What led up to the situation?

Can't use video on youtube. Gif's no longer work. And I cannot get media to play. This started after upgrading from 66.0.3359.181-1 to 67.0.3396.62-1

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?

Reverting the package was the only solution I could find. It appears the app build may be missing some flags in the build. I found this that had similar errors to my situation https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/?nomobile=true#!msg/android-webview-dev/oVjyFhhxOQ8/ns8q9uPrCAAJ

* What was the outcome of this action?

chromium 66.0.3359.181-1 was reinstalled, video is working again.

* What outcome did you expect instead?

chromium 67.0.3396.62-1 video should work after install.

Same problem here.

Sorry for my English but I think the problem is that chromium-67 is looking for ffmpeg-4 and the version available in Debian unstable is ffmpeg-3.4.2, I don't know if it's possible compile chromium-67 against ffmpeg-3.4.2.
If it's not possible compile chromium-67 against ffmpeg-4 maybe this version and newer versions of chromium should go to the experimental branch temporarily (where there is already ffmpeg-4) or we have to wait for the transition of ffmpeg in Debian in order to have newer versions in unstable ( https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/auto-ffmpeg.html ).

Regards.

fixed 900533 67.0.3396.79-2

thanks

Hello,

this bug is fixed in the aforementioned version in unstable (not the one in experimental). The telling sign is whether it does or doesn't depend on libavcodecXX et al.

Therefore I'm correcting the found/fixed versions.

The browser won't let people switch back from 68 to 67 anyway,
they would have to rip up their whole profile.

Have you ever considered not upgrading when packages land in
experimental? They are after all experimental.

Best wishes,

You could just apply the change

https://salsa.debian.org/chromium-team/chromium/commit/402b98bb1079079a788696650e0a922b1e16bed8

and build v68 for yourself. You would need ~8G of disk space and several
hours. BTW I do this sometimes with other packages.

Hi,

I'm running chromium 67.0.3396.87-1~deb9u1 on stable - the bug still
occurs here.

Example video: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6nlrix (just randomly
picked from dailymotion)

Behaviour: nothing happens when pressing the play button

As mentioned the bug still exists in chromium 67.0.3396.87 from the
Debian Repo. I setup a totally fresh VM for this purpose running stretch.

There I downloaded the source and compiled following the instructions at
[1]. Upstream Chromium 69 worked fine so I tried to compile the exact
same version as installed by APT on my notebook 67.0.3396.87 including
[2] into my workflow.

The 67.0.3396.87 version from upstream didn't have the issue. For
testing I used a plain mp3 served by python's SimpleHTTPServer:

python -m SimpleHTTPServer

First I always had the sandbox issue, I could start the
upstream-versions only with --no-sandbox. Afterwards I tried to also
compile the sandbox and start chromium using the wrapper. But this
should not be relevant here

Then I found out that the error also occurs when I used the Debian
Package on my dedicated VM. After runnig it via CLI I also got this

Yes, but the others are complaining about the version in stable-security
(which is a embarrassing, letting such an annoying bug slip through to
security updates).

Recently Debian Stretch introduced the most annoying bug ever: https://bugs.debian.org/900533 ("chromium 67.0.3396.62-1: youtube video, gif's, html5, and movies no longer work"). It affects a very very lot of Debian users. It renders entire system completely unusable. Because ability of viewing videos, listening to music etc using one's favorite browser is one of the main functions of the system.

I am unable listen music using https://vk.com/audio anymore.

Bad Chromium version was installed through stretch-security repository into every Stretch installation.

So, please fix the bug immediately!!! And make it install to usual Stretch installations (with stable and stable-security repos enables) in next upgrade.

This is very important, so I sent this widespread mail.

Please read the Bug log, there have been examples given already (for
example the dailymotion link by Michael Wyraz.

It's quite frankly embarassing that this bug hasn't been fixed for the
STABLE distribution almost four weeks after it has been introduced by
a security update, and the maintainer appears to not even understand
where the problem is.

I have several machines now where the chromium package is being held
back manually even though it has known security bugs, since the
current up-to-date version is unusable.

Andreas Ferber
