Package: gnome-shell
Version: 43.3-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: lxk...@wp.pl

Bug is described here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6162
and if I understand correctly, it is diagnosed as some dependency issue.

The crash occures every time both when the system is powered on connected to
the dock (the moment login screen is beginning to be displayed), and also when
dock is connected to the system which is already loged in.

same happens with version 43.2-2

From the linked issue report it looks like this is a bug in lcms fixed by
<https://github.com/mm2/Little-CMS/issues/344>, combined with a bug in
colord fixed by <https://github.com/hughsie/colord/pull/146>. There is
probably nothing that can be done about this in gnome-shell (apart from
perhaps turning off colour management, which I don't think anyone wants
to do), but resolving the crash will need coordinated uploads of both
lcms and colord, neither of which is team-maintained.

I'm not going to be able to reproduce this myself, and probably neither are
other GNOME maintainers, because the crash only happens when you have a
Thunderbolt display connected (or perhaps even a specific type of
Thunderbolt display).

On closer inspection, Debian's lcms2 already has the patch to fix that bug,
so this is purely a colord issue. It's possible that this regressed when
lcms2 was updated in January.

Anyone who doesn't have the right hardware will probably not be able
to reproduce this. Kuba, please could you try the packages from here?
https://people.debian.org/~smcv/bug1031847/

(Those test packages have the patch referenced here, plus the patches
that I already proposed on #1025554.)

I suspect that Thunderbolt docks will become increasingly widespread
during the Debian 12 release's lifetime, so it would be good to get this
fixed before the next phase of the freeze, which would mean an upload
within the next few days (cc'ing seb128 who sponsored the last upload).

Thanks,
smcv

I am happy to help with testing.

Just tested colord version you linked, the issue still occurs (did not paste stack trace but it looks the same as one I posted originally). Just for clarity, the steps I used : 1) installed downloaded packages with `dpkg -i`, 2) rebooted machine, 3) logged in and connected dock station.

$ dpkg --list | grep colord

I agree. I am available to help with testing.

That's unfortunate. Either I applied the upstream change incorrectly
(always possible!), or this is not actually the same bug that was fixed
recently in lcms2 and colord upstream.

The stack trace that you quoted looks like it could be memory corruption,
so it's not necessarily entirely obvious how to link a stack trace to
a root cause, and there might be more than one situation that leads to a
similar stack trace.

I think I've reached the limits of what I can do here, unless my
employer-provided docking station and screen happen to be able to
trigger this crash: please can someone with better knowledge of lcms2
and/or colord, or someone with hardware where this can be reproduced,
take a look?

It might still be worthwhile to get
https://github.com/hughsie/colord/pull/146 into colord even though it
doesn't resolve Kuba's crash report.

Thanks, yes, rebooting after installing an attempt at a fix is the most
reliable way to make sure you're using the new package.

I'm reassigning this back to gnome-shell for now, because we don't know
for sure that this is a lcms2 or colord bug (although it seems likely to at
least be *related to* lcms2 or colord).

Was there a recent upgrade that made GNOME start to crash in this
situation, or has this happened for as long as you have been using
this dock?

If you install the mutter and xterm packages, and create a test user with
something like this in their ~/.xsession:

#!/bin/sh
mutter &
exec xterm

then copy /usr/share/doc/gdm3/examples/custom-x11-session.desktop into
/etc/X11/sessions/, and log in to "Custom X11 session" as that user,
do you get a similar crash when you plug in the dock? If you do, that
would narrow this down quite a lot by eliminating gnome-shell from the
packages we need to consider, and isolating the bug into either mutter
or a library that it uses (such as lcms2 or colord).

(Exit from the xterm to end that session.)

I found another potential cause:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2659

Kuba (or anyone else who can reproduce this), please could
you try with mutter-related packages (at least libmutter-11-0)
upgraded to the version 43.3-3+1+g8c42befe7 that I have uploaded to
<https://people.debian.org/~smcv/bug1031847/>?

You might still need the colord packages from there *as well*, I'm not
100% sure how necessary the colord change is.

Whether this resolves the crash or not, please report back what
combination of packages you're using (`reportbug --template gnome-shell`
might be useful) and what the result was.

Thanks,
smcv

Clarification: pasted output in previous mail is not consistent, `reportbug --template gnome-shell` was done with colord patched, but then I reinstalled it, rebooted machine and copied output of `$ dpkg --list | grep colord` to the email.

Sorry for confusion.

Thanks, reassigning the bug to mutter. I'll do a new upload for that soon.
