On starting, thunderbird exits with the last line of "Exiting due to channel error.":

I have tried changing profiles through the profile manager as well as completely removing the .thunderbird directory (copying to .thunderbird.old and then restarting) but the crash remains. The result is the same starting in safe mode. I can't find the debug symbols to attempt further debugging.
